The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: Medieval Fantasy.
Deadline - 10:00PM GMT Friday 8th July 2011
Description: Medieval fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy that encompasses medieval era high fantasy and sometimes simply represents fictitious versions of historic events. This subgenre is common among role-playing games, text-based roleplaying, and high-fantasy literature., film and television. While the setting has a medieval theme, in no way must it be set in any real world medieval setting, hence the appearance of dragons, goblins, orcs, giants, mages, magicians, wizards and witches etc. This is your opportunity to create a medieval fantasy weapon, creature or scene. You could make it easy on yourself and make a sword/armour/sheild or you could create a castle/castle interior, monster or even a dragon!

Modelling Time: 90 Mins.

Prizes:

1st Place - £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge.
2nd Place - £10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge.
Honourable Mentions - Bronze Award Badges

Above All Else Have Fun & Good Luck!

Feel a bit happier about this one rather than the starter. Textures could still do with some tweaks here and there, but overall pretty happy with the modellling side of things.

CG: Great throne I like the carved details u added. I think that the wood texture might need a bit of work though :)

Chichiri: Really like the head, U could develop it a bit more seeing as this is a 90min challenge :D

CG - great throne :) . would like to have one at home .
chichiri - i agrea with astroAJ - you could have developed it more cause you have more than half an hour left. but non the less - good one.

here is my entry . not as great as others but was in a mood to escape from all that hard surface stuff from work and did a knight's bust
inspired by the pixars incredibles so if there is some likeness - blame pixar for making awesome characters i cant resist to adore. :D
spent allmost all time on it - 88min. wish i had more time so i could build the whole character.
hope you guys like it :)

well because without them you will not understand the wireframe. in my case the model has extreme angles betvien edges so its hard to recognise the topology. and ofcourse it looks better in this case :)
here is a actual file so those who dont like smoothed wires could have a closer look at it :D . o

Neil_F01
04-07-2011, 12:51 AM
nah nah.. you dont get me paulius.. its nothing personal.. its just the rules.. that wireframe render should be completed without the mesh smooth..

i think the mesh smooth is fine for the beauty render... But CG will confirm this i hope.. :D

keep it up..

i dont know if im slightly offended here... i mean.. yeah its a cool model.. you seem well competent with your tool and what not..

but you know.. most of us know what we are doing here i think.. i mean looking at most entries most weeks.. you know.. there is a high standard i guess..

but anyway.. i'm off to bed.. night all.. hopefully i'll think of something cool for this weeks comp..

I didn't notice that in the rules, smoothed wireframes were forbidden. Thanks for the remark Neil_F01

ClassicGamer-3DT
04-07-2011, 06:59 AM
Feel free to post a smoothed wireframe aswell like sometimes as paulius-st stated the wireframes look far too extreme in angles, I know in Cinema 4D it's possible to put the mesh smoothing (hypernurbs) down to a lowest level, level 1 before it's no longer smoothed. In most cases it should be unsmoothed wireframes but additional smoothed wireframes can be added also but only if the unsmoothed object is unrecognisible.

Had a little bit of free time earlier today so decided to try another entry. This is a daft one really, half the reason was to try modelling some armor and the other half was an excuse to try and model the Iron Man chest piece. I'm fairly happy with the look and the shape, there's still alot of details that aren't quite right. One thing's for sure there's so many references out there for Iron Man that I didn't have any trouble finding side, top, front pics etc. It seems just about every modeller on earth has modelled Iron Man lol.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/IronManChestArmourRenderComp.jpg
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/IMWireClayComp.jpg

Again not my best attempt at texturing, did what I could to try and rust/dirty the armor up, replaced the oh so familiar arc technology chest piece with a small fire chamber instead lol. It'd be interesting to see what the rest of Iron Man would look like in this style but I fear the head area and leg plates would be beyond me.

one question John, i'm not seeing a lot of "fantasy" or am i missing something - since in your outline you stated that entries should not be from real medieval scenery - what makes it real as opposed to fantasy?

blame it on my lack of fantasy experience

ClassicGamer-3DT

Well..... er..... i took that from wikipedia .... so..... i just think it gives you free licence to create items from that era an take them up a notch, dragons, wizards, mages etc these never existed so go from there.... put it this way if you just model armor or a sword or axe or something i'm not gonna disqualify you..... it's up to you to take it to the next level or not :)

Nice entries so far. Hopefully more to follow.

Here is my entry. I made two beauty renders, with varying trees/atmosphere/textures in vue 8.5. They represent 'Good' (colourful trees + light buildings) and 'Evil' (dead trees, red sky, dark buildings). I did this as Medieval Fantasy is mostly about good vs. evil.

The bridge and the tower are made in 3Dsmax, the rest in Vue. I also broke my 'polygon record' with my new pc totalling more than 8152 million polygons. The render that took the most time was the 'Good' render, although it was in a bigger resolution than shown on the picture (800x600). I used global illumination with superior render settings (I also tried a ultra render for a resolution of 1200x900, but I quit that after it only was half way done after 8 hours).

Hope you like it ;)

P.S. Which render you like the most? :D

Thanks for the nice words :)

And, about the point of joining in, as for myself, I learned a lot during these contests, improved my workspeed at least 100%, probably more.
Got me thinking about what hotkeys to use and where to place them, created a few macroscripts just because I thought something could be done in less time after a smc.
Just try a few and you will treat the program different, more efficient, which is extremely valuable for all things concerning 3d :).

True, I learned a lot of the things I entered in these challenges. As it gives you a certain limit (in time and concept) and a deadline I learned a lot of new things in making 3D and actually finish my models :D (the deadline is really great for lazy finishers like me xd)

My entry for this week. I had something else planned, but due to time constraints I had to scrap it and did this fun instead. Every classic gamer should recognize it. :D

Modelled in 3Ds Max in 1 hour and 10 minutes. Oh and the door is smoothed because I worked with the smoothed version after collapsing it. Its not oversight. I just did not save the work in progress model. And rocks are not smoothed. Just dense mesh.

JAPO

Sure thing, there are many ways, usually depending on how strong your PC is. I think there was a really great tutorial on 3Dtotal recently... sec...

go to tutorial section for 3Ds Max and look for 'Animating Cracks in the Ground'
by Roberth Vala. Great tutorial.

@SherifAlaa55 Vue is indeed a program which specialises in terrain making. But there are indeed different methods you can make terrain in 3Dsmax. I did that once to, using displace. I think this tutorial shows you how: http://www.cgrats.com/creating-3d-terrain-in-3ds-max-modeling.html
