thought i'd join, sounds like a nice competition..
my idea is simple, i just would like to practice a little since recently i have to create only diffuse hand drawn textures and i haven't touched zbrush for almost 3 months from now so it's time to find out if i still remember something.

i was thinking to make a king, or a queen figure. nothing special about it. queen would dominate with boobs, king would dominate with wisdom...

theese were my initial thoughts, but after i have sketched a bit i feel like going for the king, coz i won't have much spare time, and that's the easier choise

since noone seems to create only portrait figures, maybe my figure is gonna be dominated :D but creating a portrait figure instead of a character with full body will help me assuring i'll finish the contest
so here are the sketching, i don't draw pretty but it'll do to get the feeling out from my brain
in the end it's gonna be a little figure sculpted out of bone (maybe some gems, but i don't wanna put painting on it basicly)
the style i hope is going to be more real at the end, or kinda like starcraft 2 in-game cinematics that i love so much and wich is not just real but a bit idealized style
(i mean this:

or at least that's what i'm aiming at..

good luck and work for everyone :)

AlucardAssassin thx, i know it's nothing special but at least i can finally sculpt something :P
Cordero yeah, very old.. it's only scetching though so i hope the final face will look much more expressive, wise and king like, not just old.. but we'll see :)

oh well, you are one fast ******* :D

I totally like it! What do you think, can u put a neckalce in there? just trying to say something other than "awesome" :D

tsabszy
17-07-2011, 09:12 PM
thx but it's only a basic sculpt of some stereotipe king face.. and yet his face look more like he could cold heartidly send his men wave after wave till he run out of all.. rather then a wise king.. i hope i can find the balance between a "know what to do" kinda wise look, and a strong emperor at the same time.. since he has only a face, the expression is important

i was thinking on some jewelry, like necklace and hanging stuff off the crown, or braided mustage or something.. i'll see while detailing if it suits to him or not

In my opinion, the only thing making your king look cold hearted is the eyes. A little tweaking of the brows, wrinkles, and maybe even placement of the eyes is all it would take to change the entire personality. Can't wait to see it finished!

i know mate :) thx for the advice
btw my only problem is i'm not sure if i'll be able to catch the expression i want to. yet i have only spent on it a few hours though

Hey looking great so far!

What's wrong with making him cold-hearted? :-P

He looks coldhearted in the concepts (especially the second one). A good option might be to make him MORE cold hearted :-P
Solid work so far, looking forward to seeing where you go with it.
Good luck!

some progress
i wont add more wrinkles and micro detail since it's gonna be a little figure sculpted out of ivory and it wouldn't be believable

SnappedStrings you're right but i don't want to create a dark character, only a strong king, that's all :P
peter21caldwell yep, maybe i'm the only one making only head-based figure

btw i'll be out for a few days i have another duties to do.. i hope i'll have time to continue after a few days :(

Like the splotch sketches.
Great sculpting so far tsabszy! Nose, ears, and crown +

washka yep.. lots of work to do..

decided to model it in zbrush coz i don't have much spare time
besides that i haven't touched the crown, i have much tuning left to do. the beard and hair polishing chews up lots of time, so i'm going to lay down the main details (also the crown) then move back to polishing

started with the crown.. since the king chess figure has a huge cross on it's head, i wanted to have some sort of symbols about saint trinity on the crown

*edit: no progress, only changed the close up shot becouse it looked stupid

thx guys!
i must call the high poly finished, otherwise i wont have time to finish with everything else.
finished the top and tweaked some parts here and there.. unfortunately the hair and beard would still need lots of tuning, but i'm affraid i'll leave it as far i got up to now and going on to low poly and texture

thx for the comments everyone!

low poly model and baking is finished. i spend some more time on high poly (fine tuning on hair especally at the back and some other little tweaking)
going for the texture now, since i planned to create a simple ivory figure, that is about 10-15cm tall, my texture wont be to much of a big deal :S and i don't have much time left either :P

Looking good man, digging the style and how all the nifty details turned out :)

tsabszy
31-07-2011, 05:49 PM
thx hula! glad you like it!

that would be the final version with textures and two lights (only a shot from 3ds max viewport)
unfortunately it looks more like a sandstone figure instead of ivory what i wanted, but i'm tired, so i call it finished

thx Hula again! well, i really need to improve in presenting my work, coz the winning shot and beauty shots turned out really stupid :D

i hope you can finish your stuff too!

tsabszy, really great model! short and sweet, like they say "sometimes less is more". love the solid feeling of his hair.

glad you like it! yeah, i was going for a simple aproach, but still it was a good lesson in some ways

i was tinkering around in marmoset toolbag, thought i'd show the result, coz of lack of time my presentation was awful :S
i didn't change anything regarding the textures and model, only played with multiple lighting and shading solutions

this one was my 1st try with a slight post effect only and simple phong shading

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11791100/work/chess_battle/Battle_Chess_King_Final.jpg (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11791100/work/chess_battle/Battle_Chess_King_Final.jpg/)

and here there's more dof and skin shader with a little sss since it supposed to be ivory :D

and also a turntable

thx guys!
yes it's really worth it to use marmoset i can just recommend it to everyone..
i made my screenshots with a two light shader from max viewport, but the environment reflection part of that shader didn't work and of course cast shadows don't work well (or at all) with dx shaders in 3ds max so it couldn't look even a tiny bit close to what i wanted without some retouch. and i wanted to avoid that since it was a low poyl competition..

anyway marmoset toolbag has it all in a really clean and user-friendly way!
