Oi!
Not much to show really, just wanted to start posting, since I'd like to participate, not just appear out of nowhere and say "I did this in the past month, sorry for not posting wips" :D
So I saw an image of a ninja or something in this pose, and I decided to make a pawn.. As you can imagine, nothing is really final, and nothing is decided yet on the field of style. (only thing thats sure, that the piece will be below 4k triangles total, and will only use diffuse map)
I hope everyone will have fun, may the best win!

i like it very much :)
it looks like a figure and not just a "some kind of" character
he could really use a body since he has no back or stomach :D (just kidding) keep it up!

cool :)
maybe some overpaint? or you just continue modelling?
Cordero
17-07-2011, 08:56 PM
Well I should make an overpaint in order to practice, but I could move on with modeling since I have a strong idea on what to do...
tempting to just move on :D

well if you have ideas then go to.. uhm, i mean good for you :P just continue with modelling :D
Cordero

:D Yeah, I might make a paintover after I finished with texturing :D
lots of place holders! legs needs some stuff, and pedestal needs to be defined
tsabszy
17-07-2011, 09:54 PM
btw no need to do paintover.. it was rather what i would have done. if you have your exact ideas, just continue :P
i like where it's heading.. wanna see how you draw texture for the cloak :) that's a challange

I like the elegant style! Looks like those warriors that are able to kill you without even making any move at all, lol.

looking good so far, question though wouldn't it be easier just to model him in a neutral pose than this way? just curious on the approach, keep it up.

This is a really solid concept. The character fits the pawn perfectly.
I'm curious though, is this just a concept model? or are you planning on continuing from this pose? Also, goodluck using just diffuse, that's a real challenge you've set for yourself!

tsabszy: I like texutring cloaks! :D Can't wait to start painting.
TonyClifton: Hehe thanks :D Now that u mention it, he does look like one bad@ss mofo :D
xxxcubanxxx: Well, at first I just wanted to sketch up what I wanted to see at the end in 3d, but at one point I decided that I should continue this, because I wanted this exact proportions at the end in this pose, and maybe if I go from T pose, the proportions would have changed after posing it.. I would have defo went with 'half pose' if I wanted to do highpoly, normal maps and stuff. I'm glad you like it btw :D
SnappedStrings: Thanks! I'll finish up from this pose for sure! Yeah, I'll do what I can and a bit more to make a cool looking diffuse for this bad boy :D
Lil update, modeling some stuff out, and adding details 2800 faces so far, soo I've got another 1k to play with.. I'll probably round stuff out, and add some items to the legs, and base. Thats a monkey head on his shoulder btw, but my render settings are unacceptable... and I'm lazy :D
Also added a mask to him, it makes him less unique -> more pawn like.

tsabszy: Thanks mate!
poopipe: Thanks! I'm really glad you like it
Noothing much really, but since I'm running out of time here, I decided I'll try and bring each part of the model to a certain level of detail, and when the whole texture is done in say level 1 detail, I can work my way up to like level 10.. so at each point, I can submit my entry because basically everything is done, just can be better...
(this is not level 1 yet btw :D )
I'm now looking for materials, because obviously a chess figure's arm can't be (shouldn't be...) made out of real flesh, so I'll try and find some cool looking stuff like marble, or something like that. I already use wood, leather, marble and metal..
This is one of the white pawns. I'll make a black version too.
let me know what you think!

I think it is looking very good so far. What do you you think about a more rock/stone like look, instead of marble? That would be a simpler look and may be combine better with metal and wood.
Cordero
30-07-2011, 01:51 PM
Thanks! Well rock is a good idea, but the model should represent that kind of surface, and since its kind of smooth, I think marble will work better.
I should have thought of it earlier :D
TonyClifton
30-07-2011, 02:17 PM
Yeah, you are right. I think it will turn out a nice contrast between the materials. A smooth marble body protected by rawer materials.
