The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Everything is shader based, no textures used here apart from the table cloth, took a while to figure out how to get it close to the real world counterpart, it's still not close enough but i'm fairly happy with the render.

Looks nice CG,
The materials looks cool. Im pretty impressed how the bacon looks, no texture on that one?

This one going to be hard for me =/. I usually "skip" breakfast. Or well i usually work nights so i sleep when it's breakfast time.
I have saved some pictures from google, so i now try to get an idea of what to create. Hopefully i can get something together and show it on time.

Yeah the bacon is the only one that worked well enough and with a bit more work maybe the sausages, looking at it again now it looks cartoony to me and so that's the style i'll say it's meant to be lol.

Hey, I found some free time before the uni begins. I tried to make a "crostata", I loved it when I was living in Milan. Also I made a cappuccino and some orange juice, then I modelled a drop of water which I instanced with modo replicators.

I know the shaders could use a bit more work. But I don't have much time and I wanted to get in the smc's again, it's been a while.

Great starter CG. I specially like the fork model and the orange juice shader.

Im trying to do stuff, but all sort of thing get in the way :/
But i will definietly do something, dont matter what it looks like :)

I actually have modelled some waffles today, but then i had to leave home, so i will try to finish it today or tomorrow, the hardest part is to figure out how to do the syrup =/

I will try to cook something. I still have no idea what should I do. If I do my breakfast, I will be done in 10 minutes or less. Unless I model every single grain of cacao used in the cup...

edit... its also on verge of torture. I am trying to keep my weight in check, and now I have to browse food pictures on internet :D

edit II... got IDEA. And I think I will have time this evening.

Modelling and shading/materials are 100 done for me. Now ive only got the beauty render left, but my slow computer is proving it hard to get anything done in a decent time. I think it's probably time to get an upgrade :D

Great entries everyone :)

Finally managed to get this done, modelling was the easy bit, doing the beauty was a bit of a pain lol, I'm going to need to learn more about shaders because I'm taking way to long to make them. The DOF pass worked really well on my beauty this time :D

aww, that make me hungry :D Looking great astroAJ, the only thing that looks of is the syrup or what it is, it looks a bit to much like mustard. but nice work anyway.

Great entries from every body else too :)
CG will have a hard one here, not many entries to choose from and they all have a pretty high quality standard.

Greetings everyone
this has been most excruciating speed challenge I have done so far. It was like distillery tour for alcoholics anonymous. I mean... PANCAKES !

Anyways, here it goes. Created in 76 minutes in 3Ds Max 2008, rendered with Vray.

I'm gonna close this challenge at 9pm again, as with last time if you happen to post an entry before 10 it will be counted. I have to be up very early tommorrow so apologies to all.

SMC 25 is live and ready to go.
