The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Cheers, been playing with Cinema 4D R13 this week, the most amazing new addition is a physical render engine as standard alongside the AR3, and improved camera settings such as DOF and motion blur, it's basically like having Maxwell Render as standard with C4D, it's certainly been keeping me entertained, and i've also just got Time Crisis and the Playstation Move with a gun holster, it's like i'm back at the arcades lol. Also received Monkey Island Special Edition for the PS3 this morning, it was only released Friday :) Gonna be racking up some hours playing that gem all over again.

Hey, here we are with my entry.

CG- I'm not sure if you will see fit my entry with the topic "Old School", if you may disqualify my entry I'm ok with that. Just found funny the idea of mixing and old school palette with it's modern counterpart, and thought it will fit the topic. The pen is copied from wacom intuos reference though.

Anyway, I'll try a really old school object, I was thinking in modelling a detailed oil tube.

ClassicGamer-3DT
14-09-2011, 11:47 AM
No that's perfectly acceptable, the meaning of old school meant any art created in media other than a computer, which is ironic as we are using computer's to create said art, but clay, metalwork, woodwork, plasticine, chicken wire, paintings, drawings, charcoal, chalk, crayons, felt tip pens, colouring pencils, all things like that really.

saw an image on Google and thought i would mimic it, Okay a very quick entry, which took me longer than anticipated in the post work and texturing, saw this as a good opportunity to play with modo's hair and fur textures.

anyway very simple one from me

Hey, I made a second entry, pretty happy with the result, but I'm sorry I couldn't make a beauty render, Uni classes started today and I don't have the time. If I found some time I'll make one and update the entry with a proper beauty.

Silverflame- killer entry mate.

an unusual 2nd entry for me as had a bit of time today and thought I would continue my rainbow theme. wanted to make the cleanest model I possibly could think it turned out well, still amazed by modo's rendering power, the beauty shot is untouched in the post work, thats exactly how it come out, lost a bit of clarity though when i saved it down to 195kb for the forum???

Hmmm Been quite some time since I visited these boards ( or submitted an entry in a Speed Modeling Comp for that matter )
The last time I was here the SMC had changed and the entire site seemed to follow one themed comp per month.

EG, Topic = X all the comps used the topic for the month. Speed Modeling, Painting, etc.

Is this no longer the case ? Has the SMC gone back to the old format ? ( weekly, bi-weekly, 60-120 minute sessions ? )

timberwo7ves
20-09-2011, 10:56 PM
SMCs are generally weekly, and usually either 60 , 90 or 120 minutes.

That wasn't the SMC's, the one you are referring to is the unified challenges that we had back then whereby the whole forum participated from whichever was their strongest field, so modellers, low poly modellers, sculpters, and painters etc.

These SMC's are just about the same as the old SMC's back from when I was just a member and Marty McFly the moderator ran the forum section.

Good to see you back Daye :)

Daye
21-09-2011, 06:12 PM
Ahhh yes. . . McFly :D

Once the monthly stuff came into play, the prizes were a bit better and the competition it attracted made it tough. My skills are mediocre at best, but embarrassing next to some of the pros. Thus, did I leave 3D alone for a while.

I needed some sort of motivation to model again and since the SMC format is still intact, no time like the present I suppose.

Other than what appears to be a slightly larger image format ( and two of them at that ) I'm guessing the rules remain pretty much the same. Model the subject in or under the time allotted, submit the images ( unsmoothed wires and clay with beauty optional ) and note the software used. Standard poly or nurbs modeling systems ( eg, no sculpting here ) only.

See you still use C4D :D I'm trying to wean myself off of Softimage and into Maya, but it's hard to break old habits. The new release of Zbrush being underway will make it tough to go back to poly modeling :D

Yacer

better post entries than discussing actionscript i guess :)

Here's my entry. Daye :haha: :
Software used: Rhinoceros,Softimage XSI,Vray for Rhino; Modelling time: 90 minutes; Texturing time: 30 minutes.

LOL nice one Antor ;D

Daye
22-09-2011, 06:53 PM
Antor: Outstanding. A Rhino AND XSI user. Even a V-Ray user! Gonna go
buy me a lotto ticket lol ( Though I still prefer Mental Ray over V-Ray, V is
a damn nice option to have when you don't want to export a bazillion poly
object over to XSI for rendering. )

Nice entry btw.

Mine won't be nearly as impressive. Going to start back on these slowly so I
can remember where all my options are . . .

Crayons: The artistic medium of choice for artists under 10 years of age :D

Software: Softimage
Time: ~45 minutes for modeling and at least half that again remembering how
to correctly set up my Duplicate Multiple option.

Daye
22-09-2011, 11:26 PM
I used to play with a variant of one of these devices. Suffice to say digital is much, MUCH easier to correct mistakes ( and more forgiving ) :P

This one done in Rhino. Full 90 minutes and that front handle absolutely kicked my a$$ in the end. Could not get it to look right to save my life. Thus did I go with one a bit less complicated.
