The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Signs it is.

On the plus side, there are about a billion references just about anywhere you look these days.

After thinking about this for a few minutes, coming up with a design that isn't your standard
flat plane with a graphic slapped to it is going to be more difficult than I originally thought.

An infinite amount of neon type signs can be done, but most signs are really . . . well. . .rather
boring to look at . . . . those that aren't will be a nightmare to model I think lol

This is a lot damn harder than I thought it would be.

On the one hand you have signs that take sixty seconds to make. On the other you have epic signage that is tough to model even without time restrictions. . . .

This is as far as I could get in an hours time on the famous " Welcome to Las Vegas " sign. No way I could do the neon on this thing.

Full 60 minutes. Rhino.

The reference for it:

Daye Good start already :), you did really well with that sign, I might make my own version on that sign later on :)

Regarding my starter sign, it was totally made up, I was thinking of restaurant signs and what name's I liked and Neptune's Pantry seemed cool, I was also keen to have a go at creating some ornate designs that are actually modelled aswell :)

There's alot of scope for this challenge, particularly in pub signs, there's ornate and intricate details that can make it more of a challenge, you could model a giant burger & fries for instance or create the planet express logo from Futurama, or make a space satellite diner etc. There's clever billboards, sandwhich boards, road signs, western signs with bullet/shotgun holes through them..... there really is alot of choice....... not just a basic sign with a photoshopped artwork slappped over it and some text (although your free to do that if you wish) ...... try doing what I did and actually model everything (if you can of course) :)

Fancied another go here, always wanted to create a neon style sign and liked the look of the old Pepsi text logo. I've coupled it with the newer Pepsi Logo aswell, and experimenting with lens effect on the sun to get a nice sun effect. The city in the background is created by Nick Campbell's City Kit and is just there to help dress the scene a little :)

Hey John, thats a nice entry, I'm a bit puzzled about how did you achieve the solar disc effect, is it a lens effect from c4d or postpro?

ClassicGamer-3DT
25-09-2011, 04:27 PM
It's in the sun tag settings for the light, under the tab lens there is a drop down menu to choose sun 1 or sun 2 I chose sun 1 and it gives a great glow/bright sun streaking effect. You can set the scale and rotation of the sun streaking etc, it's a great effect that is added after the render finishes, kinda like a post effect but it happens within C4D itself.

Okay here comes my first entry.
I decided to model from this reference
http://rawpixels.ca/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/20090917-_MG_5167.jpg

As you can see i kinda run out of time, but i think im getting faster on this, and thats the main reason for doing those challanges :)
The splines took way to much time, and i didnt have anytime left to finish the metalwork or the lightbulbs, so this is what i have.

i'm hopping i can join the fun with you guys, i reckon if i drive 80miles/h that i would be able to make it. Currently far away from home, still on business...

But all in all some really good realistic signs posted.

I made an attempt at the Planet Hollywood sign. Failure was my reward lol . . . .

Since there isn't a ' Planet Hollywood ' font, had to rebuild the lettering by splines and it
took up far too much time. Also discovered that in order to get the words to wrap around
the globe correctly ( without crazy distortion ) would have to do the letters individually.

Rhino's bend operator does have its limits apparently :D

ClassicGamer-3DT
30-09-2011, 03:53 PM
oooohhhh that would have been a great sign to try to model.

Daye
30-09-2011, 04:25 PM
May yet be time. After posting that, I started looking into alternatives for wrapping the text around the globe. Rhino can do a Flow command where it will wrap your target around a curve or surface. See if I can pull it off or not before the time expires.

Daye
30-09-2011, 08:06 PM
My attempt at the Planet Hollywood sign ended in flaming failure. lol

Try as I might, I couldn't get the damn text to wrap around the sphere to
my liking, so I scrapped the entire thing and just randomly started modeling
another one.

This is the end result of that. No reference. Just started modeling. Sixty
minutes later, this is what it looks like.

I won't show you the back side as I ran a mirror / symmetry command to
get both sides the same. However, I forgot text doesn't work well with that
method, so the back side of the sign is geared towards the dyslexic :D

Rhino @ sixty minutes

I know it's late, but if is ready ...

Nice mate, How did you managed to arange those lightbulbs over a spline, I tried to do that for ages, but i cant find a way to do it, i use max 2012, maybe you could point me to a tutorial or just a brief description how to do it.

ClassicGamer-3DT
01-10-2011, 07:45 AM
Is there something like align to spline in max that could do that effect, in cinema 4d there's a number of ways that could be acheived the faster result would be possible with Mograph and using object mode with cloners. Does max have an object scatter function or similar? It would beat trying to arrange manually or haphazardly etc.
