The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

My Starter

Not enough time for starter tonight, i'm thinking of making a flower that's a stereo speaker where the pollen would be and metal petals etc. It will come though..... so be patient :)

Okay, the concept is pretty straightforward.

However, it's still an organic shape thus a b*tch to model.
It's not the materials that make organics tough, it's the
shape. . . .

( For me anyway lol )

I have plenty of ideas already, but have no idea if I can pull
any of them off.

Have to think pretty hard on this one.

So, it's a modelling challenge about texturing?
Did get some awesome finds though when googling for "metal animal" so depending on workload i might join in.

Well it's a little about both, you can model a banana made out of metal for instance, or a gun out of banana's, that kind of thinking :)

Very busy today tidying up the house, we've amanged to compile a seriously huge amount of crap....

i have so much ideas, hoping that i end with lecturing on Wednesday so i can do a few... work is killing me recently, haven't slept last night and working from 8-22 with people, so i can't even doze off, or daydream...

anyhow, of to sketch my ideas on a piece of paper until i get a chance to get something done

Well. . .

I've ruled out insects and most plants as there is no way I can do them under
the time limit. Walked around my building at lunch, nothing inspiring :|

Like I said, the way I normally do organics is via Z-Brush -> Retopo. I have
always had hell modeling them directly in any standard modeler. Dunno if I can
get one done or not.

We'll see I guess.

In which case model something inorganic, that resembles something organic in appearance aswell as texturing.

Dude, of course you can! think of something simple and transform it. You could for example model a cartoonish-looking-leapfrog - out of bricks. So basically you just model 3 or 4 different types of bricks, and then clone and reassemble them, til they look somewhat like a frog.
Dont go to crazy about details of a real frog. its just about to make something that looks close enough like an organic thing. or vice versa - donīt get carried away with realism on this topic, cause itīs per definition totally unreal. let your mind flow, look at objects that have simple shapes, those can be modeled easily, and just thing of something weird, what it could be made of. For example a hat, made out of bacon, steaks and sausages - and i really have no idea, why i as a vegetarian, come up with this. :) good luck man!

After starting over on no fewer than two spiders and one frikkin shark ( sans
laser beams ) I threw in the towel and went for a simple flower.

Not happy with it, but it is what it is. Sorry about the mesh density, but when
you hit a simple Nurbs surface with a twist operator, the surface becomes not
so simple afterwards. :|

It's Rhino @ 82 minutes.

That's some sweet shapes and very well modelled. Glad to see at least one entry. I'm having a nightmare at home at the moment..... I mentioned having new windows... well when they came to the house last week they said they couldn't do it due to clutter and furniture in the way of the windows (they need a certain amount of room to work in) So it's been me on my own trying to tidy, move and re-organise 7 rooms in the house, the only trouble is storage, you move things out of one room but need the room in another and so on and so on, i'm having a break from it tommorow and going to the cinema to let my body/muscles relax, alot of lifting/carrying/moving of quite heavy furniture amongst other things.... and my flabby muscles aren't used to it!

So apologies for no starter (yet) it will come but real life has taken center stage i'm afraid.

Also sorry for the rant lol.

7 rooms alone - i guess it took some persuasion to get your self to do it in the first place :) damn

As the title states this is my first ever attempt at a speed challenge. I was going for a willow tree made of flex piping, plumbing piping and tech-type devices(i.e. keyboards, mice, etc.) Perhaps I chose a concept much to grand for my level. I had fun with the challenge at any rate. I also noticed that the wires didn't come out as good in the clay render as they did in the wireframe renders. Perhaps that is due to them being so thing or the lighting not exactly sure.

jassi.maac - a nice faberge egg but i dont think eggs count as organic stuff. and zbrush isnt realy a modeling app and i think its not realy eligible to post zbrsuh work .

Peas - lol. those are some scary snakes :D . well done.

updated my beauty render with a textured one (my first textured smc entrie) - not something i ussualy do :D .

Peas - Wonderful entry lovely modelling very fun :)

jassi.maac - Nice attempt but i'm afraid it won't be counted as an entry, regardless of the egg being created as a base mesh very little modelled work has been used in 3DS max, if you had added say 5-10% of ZBrush as a displacement/normal map then that would be acceptable but i'm afraid this entry will be disqualified. Sorry but it's all in the rules.

Also just to mention that this challenge is extended to next friday 28th October and it will be a halloween themed challenge.

jassi.maac

ClassicGamer-3DT
20-10-2011, 07:29 PM
Nah sorry......... it's still a quick egg model..... it's not enough to warrant a proper entry in my opinion...... although you are free to re-try from scratch a new entry of course. You're a talented modeller so i'm sure you'll manage something else easily.

MUCH happier with how this one turned out. I'm no concept artist. Can't
think up a design to save my life. GIVE me a design to play with and I can
model it with no issues. Just don't ask me to come up with it initially.

This design is courtesy of Sarif Industries. ( Deus Ex: Human Revolution )
Was pretty happy with the final result. Front eye lens probably could have
been done better, but -shrug-

Dan: Thanks.

I let Vray chew on a bigger / prettier version of the beauty render and
stuck it over on Deviant Art. It can be seen here:

My entry this week, a Robitic Eye (inspired by the many seen all over google images) I used the full 90 mins, could have done with some more time for some more details here and there.

Was up till an ungodly hour last night texturing, adjusting poses and rendering  Finally finished it now

There are some other renders that i can really fit on here that ill be putting on my blog (http://dantrodgers.wordpress.com)

edit: why is my banana not dancing??

One of the most amazing games I've had the opportunity to play so far this year of this genre. Freeze's design is cool, reminds me of The Animated Series' Freeze at bit. Still playing and can't wait for the bundle packs later this year to get all the other characters and Batman skins including the Fear skin from Green Lantern.

Yeah definatrely, got the Catwoman downloaded and i'm at Mr Freeze stage at the moment, such a good game....... it's certainly gonna tide me over until Battlefield 3 & Uncharted 3 arrive. The Sonic Generation demo is sweet i really like both new and old sonics. :)

Meh.

I was going to pick up Battlefield 3, but then EA has decided that the Origin client
( their version of Steam ) is mandatory for the PC version. So, I probably won't bother.

I'm still undecided on Diablo III due to the always online requirement as well.

Regardless of the spin they put on it, both Steam and Origin are designed to kill the
secondary game market. Your game serial number is tied to your Steam / Origin account,
thus killing off any possibility of it finding its way into the used game market.

Thus are the consoles winning in that department. However, due to the sh*tty controls
on the consoles, I won't be buying that version either lol. I also hate the fact games are
primarily developed FOR the consoles, with a PC version simply a port thereof. As a result,
we get to play the limited versions the consoles enjoy, ( since their hardware isn't as strong )
on a high dollar gaming rig capable of far more. :|

Maybe it's just time to give up on gaming completely ?

Between the console limitations and DRM infested PC versions, it's a wonder anyone
still buys them at all.

That's true most of the time, but for Battlefield 3 the main development platform is PC.

A pity you don't play it on PC mates, would have been nice to play with you:(

Yeah you'd probably kick my ass lol, i'm really crap at playing games but I love playing them! Which is more important for me, I'm hoping to get Uncharted 3 & Sonic Generations for my birthday.... played the demo of Sonic and was very enjoyable.

Anyway... back on topic anymore entries coming this way before Fridays deadline.... it would be nice :)
