We all need a folder somewhere to dump all of these mats into so that some poor bugger can sort them into categories and post them for all to download.
Send yours to Aurorae, or something, cause he offered:

Just normal brazil glass, with a few color changes. But this shows the cool effect that you can get, even with simple models. I really like the look of this:p(BTW i've only had brazil for a few days)

radar, how did you do those tumerous things?
Is that just a regular sphere or have you edited a sphere? I see no way to make a amaterial change the shape of and objects that much. Of course there are bumps, but....

My guess is.... hmm.. lets see.
Sphere with a LOT of segments. Give it a displace modifier and use the same bump map as he uses in the material.

Hey Radarhead, Could you please post atleast one of your more complex materials for download? I have been playing around with materials for months now and only have a few decent ones whitch were formed I think more by luck. I would like to see how you set up the maps.
I would post my mats but my computer is almost compleetly striped with everything on CD's. I just bought Max 5 and I want to reformat before I install : ) Mabey if I remember after I get all situated. You can see a little on my site. But I have learned so much more in the past months my site is really out dated.
Radarhead, I will host the file if you want.

I'm aware of displacement modifier, although it is impractical is many situations.

Does this reqire a high amount of polys?
Ok, I can get it to show the displacement in the tex editor but not in render... any help??
[edit again] Ok, i figure it out, you have to convert what you are rendering to an editable mesh, nurbs, or bezier patch. Just for anyone that doesnt know. And the mesh density does effect the render, it is very similar to a displace modifer, it does edit the geometry but does not display in the viewport. [/edit again]

He he. By Procedural I mean like "noise" or "cellular". A Computer Generated texture or pattern. This Material test area is nearly all procedural mapping.
Oh, and cbaristo, if you want that to look like cloth, then try bumping down the specular quite a bit to make it look more fabric like...

Once again another selfless post, Thank you for the material file!
The Typhoid material looks so real, where did you get that from? hehe
The corroded copper is excellent as well, It helps being able to look through the tree and see how it was put together.
Thanks again Ed. (It took me 58 seconds to render the perspective view.)
cbaristo: I think that material looks like a rubber pond lining or some sort of acoustic insulation. well done :)

Okay, I got 3 more emails, regarding people who wanted me to send the mat lib. Unfortuntely, ONE person has sent in there materials, no one else. I cant send it out if it is not done. Please, anybody who has contributed to this thread it would be great if you could share your materials. Remember also, Tom-3DT said that we could compile them (doing that), and possibly have it for download on the www.3dtotal.com homepage. Veeery nice Tread. :)
I am new on this forum, but old visitor of 3DTotal. Tim, have one of the Worlds Best 3D Foruns here. I like it very much. Unfortunatelly i donīt have much spare time to participate more, on this forum. And my english is not so good too. :)
So...I just love Shading, materials, Shaders, and textures/procedurals.
I like to study ways to use Procedurals combining then on many layers. Itīs not a inteligent or "the right thing to do" all the time. I like to do it for study, and to apply on my job too. But procedurals are not the final solution for everything. We need to balance itīs use combining with the good and old BitMap textures to archieve the look we are searching for.
I like to treat each job, and each case, as a isolated parte. I can do 10 animations using metals (iron), and for each animation i will do ALL the shaders from the scratch. I just donīt like to use Libraries.
Itīs because i like to try something new each time i can do a new shader. This way i can open my mind to try or to discover something new creating each material. This is a good way to improove your Shader Tweaking Skills. :)
I have some pics, iīve made just to study procedural materials in Max 4 and 5. I will post some of then here, and try to trade some usefull information with the people here. :)
This is an old Pic. I thinks itīs the first time i have used for study, procedurals shaders on and entire scene. Even for the "model deformation". Iīve inspired from the well know image of the MASTER, Neil Blevins... :)
http://www.chamaleonlovers.com/~marcelosouza/images/hi/microcosmo.jpg
These are other tests using just procedurals on all the shaders :
http://www.chamaleonlovers.com/~marcelosouza/images/hi/bolts.jpg
Another one...This time i tried to made a kind of Chinese Food, i donīt know the right name in english, but in portuguese we call it "Pastel" :
http://www.chamaleonlovers.com/~marcelosouza/images/hi/food.jpg
This is a BlackPower Hair Shader...rsrs...Just some strokes as a tileable texture and many planes uses on on Scatter over a Sphere. The render is a bit slow... :)
http://www.chamaleonlovers.com/~marcelosouza/images/hi/blackpowerpixaim.jpg
I did i Snow/Cloud Shader one day too...Itīs simple bu nice to use in Cartoon Clouds, or with some adjustment as Cartoon Snow. :)
These Pics are alreay a bit old. I need to have my life back (too much work here...rsrs), to restart my study and tests again. :)

i love those first 2 marcelo!
MarceloSouza
27-08-2003, 05:54 AM
Ops...Btw...I said, that i donīt like to use the libraries directly on my projects, but itīs a totally personal choice. I am sure that libraries are A LOT usefull to study. One of the best way to learn materials and Stuff in 3D, is to catch the source file of the project and study it. So you can copy everything if you just want to have fun, or you ca try try to replicate all the materials and the process using you own skills. And checking the source for study only.
I prefer the second choice. ;)
Woody
27-08-2003, 10:06 AM

I need to start to do some (many) tests with Anisotropic maps. Their behavior looks strange to me at the first sign, but i archieved some good results just using the logic. Mas i donīt know how to use the direction maps, to control the "scratch" direction.
I never needed to double the Anisotropic look, so, i never put more focus on this study. But, i need to do it. :) Last week i received a task to model a Radio, like that old Big Radios, called BoomBox (GuethoBlaster), so, the material of theses pieces are a bit difficult to recreate, some parts are shinny, glossy, and the buttons (like the volume dial), need to have that Perfect Example of Anisotropic Specular....rsrsrs...
When the radio is Done, i will send a render to here. The shader of the buttons, with 3DSMAx anisotropic shader, works nice, but i donīt know how to control it well right now. Need some study on it. :)

It's fairly simple... you just go to Render -> Effects, select Add -> Blur, and at the effect's options, you go to the 'Pixel Selections' tab, deselect 'Whole Image' and select 'Luminance'... After that you play around with the settings to get the desired effect... I just love this effect! :D

grr, still hardly any materials. COME ON PEOPLE!
Take just 5 minutes to put them in a library! I bet it wont even take you that, and even less to email (most are less than 40kb) to andrew.charlton@ntlworld.com.
Dont forget, I will include a readme or something in the final one, so your name and hard work will not go unnoticed.
I have 4 at the minute, and considering the amount of people posted in this thread, If I presume you guys actually want to do this, which I certainly do then get your ass emailing them mats :p

I have been trying for a few hours now to make a material that disintegrates over time, it's not the case of a simple blend material because i want a sort of buffy type burning effect which is similar to the lava effect created here...http://www.3dm-mc.com/tutorials/ps/ the problem is you can make it look like it's burning and moving around the object by using the phase but i'm stuck as to how to make it transparent where the bright lava has been, if you know what i mean. I know that most of these type of effects are done in compositors with procedural mattes but there must be a way of doing it in max. p.s i'm using version 5 of max

The way I would think to do that material is as follows. Whatever map you are using as a mix map, copy it to the opacity slot. That way, over time as your map changes phase, as will the opacity.

But, not a single ICE ! realistic ice or a cartoony look kinda ice, i think it can be an important "book" to add to the library, like aurorae said... so let`s try and make ice ! i`ll get right on it, you guys should try too

At previous page, someone asked for an icecube material...
As ``glass`` materials, an ice material looks good and realistic only if the surrounding enviromment is good...
Here`s an icecube material, without any enviromment around it.
That`s why it doesnt look realistic...
I will post a render with the same material (within an enviromment) later on, to see the difference in realism...

Ok this is a cool effect with fall-off and smoke and mixes in the opacity, I came up with ... the object is rendered hollow in the middle then as it goes to the 'outside' it gets a smokey opacity, then at the border it's fully visible (opacity 0)
it's cool if you need to render a cool ghost

31-08-2003, 09:08 AM
sure thing :D . actually i dont know why i posted that. that falloff map looks pretty kewl master_amante, if you r using max then you can delete the other textures in the mat editor by making a grey tex in one box then dragging that to copy over the ones you dont want. //edit//: *points down* or you could do that :halo: im useless today.
master_amante: you can open the material library, then click "save as" and name it something else. The open mat.lib will be the new named one (It will say the name at the top of the window) Then click on each material in turn and press the cross button at the top that will delete the selected material from the library.

a tire material is easy. You can use just a regular default blin material, hardly any if not none glossiness and a low Specular level. The trick to making them look real is lighting. There is a tire modeling tutorial here;

ok i dont have installed max 4.2 and max 4.0 with raytrace material dont have shading with anisotropic, i dit it with raytraced and anisotropic shading but i think you can make it with raytraced without anisotropic, i dont remember if max 4.2 have raytrace with anisotropic shading so here i put the config material, you can study and create it.
lets beging:
this config its for raytraced with anisotropic shading
1_) material raytraced with shanding anisotropic (or phong)
2_) difuse: R 255, G 82, B 82
3_) specular color: R 201, G 75, B 65
specular level: 250
glossiness: 12
anisotropi: 12 (if max 4.2 have it) i dont remember
soften: 10
4_) ESTENDED PARAMETER:
translucency: R 180, G 51, B 0
5_) bump amount: 10
material for bump: noise (leave it by default just change noise parameters to fractal and size to 10)
thats all, maybe you can lost quality without max 5 but you can chage the parameters for use in max 4.2 =) so enjoy it =D

hi again, geez this is a trouble make compatibility for old version of max but this one its for my friend starwax lol sorry its starwar =D its a joke, ok this one its for max 4.2 dont look like the version for max 5.1 but i think its pretty close max 4.2 dont have anisoropic shading in raytrace so that its shame so as an advice update to a newer version of max because when the library its finish youll got a lot of problem when you try to open, for those people who download the version for max 5 they dont need download this material this one its for starwar.
P.D. someone in a post say need brazil demo maybe i can help just send me a pm
I'm going to mail mine soon.

hey Aurorae
are u going to sort these mats out say like... default, brazil, and vray only mats or are you going to slap them together as 1.. I am wondering cause some people might have issues wit default max renderers and vray renderers if they dont ahve them....
Here is some screenshots. I was reworking the materials, and decided that they are done.
some other stuff, including Cel Shaded Chrome. :D
Note:The quality is bad, so its a smaller file size.
Note2:This isn't my model, it came with Max5 under InkNPaint examples. The mats are mine though.
Some other mats. Including the cel gem.
haha i really like that one Goj :D
send your mats to aurorae everyone! i brwose through this thread like every day but dont post lol
all of them are wicked awesome
BAH i said wicked.... thats probably the only thing characteristic to massachusetts

Hi.
I have a question about scenes for making thes materials.
well....i want to ask that ,what are u using as an environment in scene to show the best look of this materials.
I don't know how to discribe this, i mean hdri, light and others.
:)
Ps. Sorry for my english,i'm still learning :)

Depending on the scene i normally use a combination on lights and HDR. HDR in my opionion makes a scene complete and far more realistic. Got to choose the right light probe for it tho to get the scene right

:)
and what about "ground"?
Do u use any, or none?
Thx 4 answer :)

I use a CSG ground plane (thats in brazil), it puts a plane all over the ground in essence. I normally set it to white, unless i have to change it to something else. Heres a pic i did today to test caustics, hdr and u will c the CSG floor as well :D
Mav88

U could just use a massive plane on the ground, that would create the same effect. Its nice to test new materials so this is keeping on topic i think, hehe. I never like to c the environment either, personal preference, just because i find it messy, and i like this look there best !!

Mav88...nooooo!!!!...and yes...:) A plane is a "physical" object on your working space, 1) cumbersome, 2) real-time, it takes processing power. Yes it would create the same/similar effect but not as nice.
What a CSG plane in brazil does, is on RENDER, creates an illusionary plane that streches to Infinity. So you dont have to deal with a the plane OBJECT.

Hello. Someone posted a link to this thread in the Caligari forums for trueSpace. I thought it was interesting, and thought I'd share some of the shaders I've come up with a tS plugin called ShaderMagic. tS isn't very powerfull in the shading and rendering department, so I and a handfull of others have been making shaders to supply what tS lacks. Here's a link to my own shader-in-progress thread and my download page. This thread has been inspirational. Keep up the great work all. :)

Oops. Sorry Starwars. Yes, those shaders are only for trueSpace. I'm not sure how hard it would be to translate them to MAX materials, as I've never used 3DS MAX. I'd like to upgrade my 3D software someday, though, as I'm really into this whole shading thing. Can anyone recommend a good program that has a good, powerful shader creation interface?

Really nice waters guys. I think it would be great to have tons of different versions of cetain things, because we want a cetain look, and all theses are the same, but have a slight difference that makes them unique.
