The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: Roadworks.
Deadline - 10:00PM GMT 18th November 2011.
Description: Roadworks occur when part of the road, or in rare cases, the entire road, has to be occupied for work relating to the road, most often in the case of road surface repairs. They can, however, also happen when a major accident occurs and road debris from the crash needs to be cleared.
Roadworks are often signposted, although it is possible that the signage comes too late or too sudden or is missing. Typical of road work signage are traffic cones, barrier boards and t-top bollards as well as other forms of warning devices. So this is your chance to model a damaged road, all the signs that exist in a road maintenance/accident, traffic lights, cones........ all manner of items apply to this challenge and it's your choice to model what you like :).

Modelling Time: 90 Mins.

Prizes:

1st Place - £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge.
2nd Place - £10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge.
Honourable Mentions - Bronze Award Badges

Above All Else Have Fun & Good Luck!

I'm not happy with my starter so adding more elements to the whole thing and making a scene rather than a few objects in a studio. After all i only spent 59 mins on the starter so I have around 29 mins left :)

EDIT: Uploaded my revised starter :)

Neil_F01

does that mean we can spend time and build our render scene.. as i just joinked one from another file.. it had road and grass.. so...

the update looks awesome cg

Here's my entry. It's simple, but I just wanted to break my slump of not having submitted anything for the last 10 comps.

This shape seemed so simple, but actually gave me quite a difficult time figuring out some of the angles and stuff.

I've actually been moving and working on my own short animation movie, that's why I haven't been posting. If anyone knows of any jobs in Austin, Tx, where I just moved to, please let me know!

Anyway, here's the submission...

+1

Gona try some sort of cartoon style dump truck for this one, but having a lot of trouble actually making something look cartoony :hmm: I have only ever really modelled things that are somewhat photo-realistic, or at least that was the goal..

i was thinking from the start about machinery, landslide damage, buildings, signs, traffic lights, fences etc... problem is in making a good concept - modeling isn't a problem... Need to combine them to look good!!!!

Neil_F01
15-11-2011, 07:23 AM
i was thinking something simple like a jack hammer... pneumatic drill.. or cement mixer..
mobile power generator thingie...

you could go artsy.. and do like a shredded tyre.. thats laying by the side of the road.. now that would be a winner.. i reckon..

How is Skyrim? I've heard very good things. I played some MW3 the other day, survival mode is amazing, the quickest 5 hours of my life

ClassicGamer-3DT
16-11-2011, 05:04 PM
I'm thinking of getting both of those games but not sure about Skyrim, i've never played anything like that kind of game or indeed that genre. I've heard it's kind like Lord Of The Rings Meets GTA.... if that's the case i'm interested :)

modelling: 72min
rendering: 6min each

ClassicGamer-3DT
16-11-2011, 11:39 PM
Fynn - Great entry but your gonna have to read the rules for the image sizes for it to be valid.

I'd like to see 1024x1280 or 1280x1024 composites please :)

Daye

Skyrim is one of those games you can't stop playing once you start. Make sure your schedule is clear if you pick it up. It will take all of your attention :)

The world is amazing and friggin HUGE. They did a damn good job on it. Tip: Dragon spots you alone, you had better run your a$$ off. I did the stupid thing and stood my ground pecking at it with arrows. Was doing great until it landed and breathed on me :/ Afterwards it was " Run Forest run " lol

Minor hiccups in the game so far for me. Occasional screen freeze and a crash or two, but overall an interesting game.

Put it this way, Mw3 is loaded, but have yet to fire it up due to Skyrim :)

yeah just checked that skyrim out.. looks a little like oblivion in some ways... i dont like first person mode for like adventure games.. its like why spend all that time making a **** hot model.. if all the player is ever going to see is the arm.. and a weapon..

Daye
17-11-2011, 02:10 PM
You're not stuck with first person perspective only. You can switch between 1st and 3rd at the touch of a button. Can also set 3rd person camera distance via the mouse wheel.

just to show i'm not a total lazy git - had a terrible week with job/car/doctor that i had no time to think this one out.

Few things i've learn is working on a scene like mine (curvy road) can be hard due to orientation of models ets. But here i stood after 60 min - loads of rocks missing, since the left side is supposed to be a mountain, and a huge boulder hit the road/fence ergo the broken fence, roadwork etc
