The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: Musical Instruments.
Deadline - 10:00PM GMT 9th December 2011.
Description: Musical Instruments (From Wikipedia) A musical instrument is a device created or adapted for the purpose of making musical sounds. In principle, any object that produces sound can serve as a musical instrument it is through purpose that the object becomes a musical instrument. The history of musical instruments dates back to the beginnings of human culture. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology.

The date and origin of the first device of disputed status as a musical instrument dates back as far as 67,000 years old; artifacts commonly accepted to be early flutes date back as far as about 37,000 years old. However, most historians believe determining a specific time of musical instrument invention to be impossible due to the subjectivity of the definition. Musical Instruments vary in size, shape and sounds and can be classified into woodwind, percussion, bowed, plucked, string, struck and electronic. The most popular instruments vary to a full drumkit, guitars, violins, keyboards, moog sythesizers, saxophones and bongos, here is your chance to model an instrument that you might own, or an instrument that you've always wanted to model, or even create your own instrument like a guitar that can be played by blowing it, or even a mixture of 1 or more instrument together...... as always the choice is yours, you can make it as easy or hard for yourself as you like.

Modelling Time: 90 Mins.

Prizes:

1st Place - £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge.
2nd Place - £10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge.
Honourable Mentions - Bronze Award Badges

Above All Else Have Fun & Good Luck!

Would love to see someone try a French Horn! even with splines it'd be a bugger to get right, i'm trying a synthesizer from the Wersi family which i've always liked the sound and look of.

My schedule is pretty tight at the moment, so I havent been sure if I would be able to participate. But this sounds like a dare, and I am sucker for that. So French horn it shall be. :)

Sorry not been online much, managed to drop a large TV onto my foot this morning whilst tidying up, what's worse is it's an old one that needs to be thrown away with a huge ass on the back of it a right nasty 32" behemoth landing straight onto my right foot :(...... just the way my luck is lately lol

"Would love to see someone try a French Horn! even with splines it'd be a bugger to get right"

Bet you would lol. . .

Even in a dedicated Nurbs / Splines system like Rhino, it would take FOREVER just to get the rail / path curves into place and lined up right.
Then you would have no fewer than a bazillion profile curves for the tube itself. THEN you still gotta detail the damn thing.

Heh. . . no thanks :D

Hi guys,

First of all, my name is Henrique and I'm from Portugal.
I've been following this forum for a few months and I felt that I should join in, so that's why I decided to post my entry for this challenge.
Here you go, hope you like it.
It's a pretty simple model of a Mini-Moog Analog Synth.
This is all i could come up with in 90min.

So here it goes. Hope every thing is alright.

Just a heads up here, this challenge may have to be extended.... i know...... I know and i'm very sorry but my foot (dropped TV on it) has gone a very nasty reddish purple around the toes and is bleeding and it's looking very likely that i'll be in hospital by the weekend, i'm hoping not but it's not looking good, so apologies if I am, i'll be able to check in occasionally via my iphone but here's hoping i'm not admitted!

Hello everyone :) Nice entries.

Gamer, you got to be careful! Ouch my sympathies. Fingers crossed its not broken bones, but please have it checked. There is way too much that can go wrong.

Pavolsvk, if I may... try changing reflection mapping of that corridor image from Screen to ShrinkWrap. It may be the kind of reflection you have been looking for :)

Rite. My time is up, modelling part finished. Now materials, render, and I can post. Gotta run now, but I will be back at 20:00 continent time and I will start with materials, hopefully finishing on time. Reflections will be real pain. By the way, did I mention what I did for my entry?

here is my entry for this week. You asked for it, so here it is :D A french horn. Research took quite some time... finding where those tubes start and end is steampunk plumber's nightmare. And splines were the answer, as you may see on the wire. I even had time for the keys mechanism.

For the record... IT'S BEEN AWESOME FUN

Modeled in 3Ds Max 2008 in 90 minutes. Rendered with Vray (render times from 10 to 30 minutes depending on angle).

JAPO you legend! that is oustanding work! Well done on getting it spot on :)

Wish I could be at home modelling, i'm bored already, stuck in an all male ward where i'm the youngest and all i've got is a broken toe! Never played this many of my apps and games on my iphone as I have in the last few hours lol. Hopefully i'll be out by Monday/Tuesday with a small cast on or something...... bloomin' hate hospitals (the staff are great though, just the other inmates). I've got too much to do I complained yesterday, but I know I need to rest it for the weekend for start to heal properly...... but still.... annoying lol.

Well should be back home by friday afternoon, only trouble is that i probably won't get back home until around 4-5pm which won't leave much time for the next SMC, i've got an idea of what to do, but it's unlikely i'll have starter ready.

Not known anything worse than an itchy foot trapped in a cast lol.

In case of confusion the AO was rendered in Maya and the Wireframe was rendered in Marmoset Toolbag.

Beautiful entries guys, well i'm ready to go home with cast on but healing really well, really excited to be going home now and excited about chrimbo, it's warming the cockles of my heart, my cockles have never been warmer...... they are boiling :)

Will crack on with the next SMC ready for tonight.... it's a good one and hopefully I may have time to make a starter entry too (dependant on how long the taxi takes to get me home).

Oh i'm tired enough, but will try and do something later on tonight. Just got back home, the new windows are in and look great! Lots of dust around though from some plastering that was done, we will be re-decorating in the new year, too close to chrimbo to do it now..... good to be back home though amongst family etc.
