Performance is not going to change much between games and 3D work. A graphics card that works well for games will also work for 3ds Max.

Well I am not 100% sure how it works in the later versions of Max (I mostly use version 2009) but at least there it is possible to force max to display the normal/bump map (although rather crudely)...
