that big crescent shaped piece is going to give you trouble if you use photosourced or handpainted textures because it's a weird shape...

checker looks ok, but i dont like these top parts of uv's (i painted them red). its better to make them round like the original shape. a wise use of flatten and quick peel makes miracles happen :) .

there is a difference in that I don't collapse to a single mesh for packing (unless I want them to be a single mesh).

I use an instanced across several objects unwrap for packing but unwrap them...

I can think of a way using the snapshot tool but...

I can think of a way using the snapshot tool but its a bit long winded.
First, create a spline the same shape as your object.
You can do this by converting to editable mesh, selecting an edge loop...
