To be honest, I do not know what those lines are. But do they exist outside your unwrapping cage? If so, you don't need do worry about them since they do not show up on the model.

Those line are just a represent of how the edges in the model (all of them also the vertical ones) flow. Without any additional lighting or a descent shader, Max just shows the, Nothing to worry...

Do you use meshsmooth or turbosmooth? I suggest you to always use turbosmooth. Its quicker and more RAM friendly.

That the arch on the right side of your mess is wierd is because your mesh isn't as straight as it is...

Try Cinema4D. I use 3DS Max myself, but I think Cinema4D is a bit easier to get into than 3DS Max. It doesn't have such a steep learning curve. Also, its a lot cheaper to buy :P

New Total Recall for instance was fun to watch with all the CGI violence, but the original is just a classic.
