What's up guys? I was trying to think of some concepts, one of which was essentially an eel/hermit crab chimaera haha. But the more I thought about it, I think that the ocean has the most amazing creatures in the entire world. Some of my favorite animals are big, slow, just absolutely stunning looking things, so I wanted to create something in a similar vein.

I was trying to get myself in the mood for something aquatic with some music... and all I had that reminded me was this song:

I love the floaty, oriental sound of it, and when thinking of a beautiful marine creature I just knew it what it had to look like!

The Umbrellafish is long and slender, with 10 main tentacles in place of a tail fin at its rear. It has a short, long dorsal fin along its back, and two small fins on each side of its body. When it does need to travel, it uses its tentacles like an octopus to propel itself, and its dorsal fin to guide its path. But instead of suckers like an octopus, the Umbrellafish actually has hundreds of smaller, jellyfish-like poisonous tentacles coming off of its 10 main ones.

The Umbrellafish will position itself upside down and open its 10 main tentacles, allowing the hundreds of smaller ones to hang down. This resulting display is how the fish got its name. Like a jellyfish, it mainly travels with the ocean currents, eating whatever is paralyzed by its poison. Their tentacles are also slightly bio luminescent, which helps to attract their prey in darker waters. Though rare, there have been large congregations of Umbrellafish spotted by divers and fishermen, who say that it is one of the most beautiful sights the ocean has to offer.

I'm going to keep working on developing the pencil drawings before I scan it in and attempt to paint. Glad I have a couple of weeks for this one!

nice music, this concept sound very interesting, I'm guess this one going to be very colorful, correct.

Thanks dude, and yes it will definitely be colorful haha.

I suck at this though... does the perspective translate? I always love dramatic angles in cg painting but never know how to render them correctly.

Here's what I did tonight for a little bit, just to get an idea of how to do this stuff
