Fan Art
Sculpting Challenge #3 Subject – Fan Art ![]() banner art by Dave Rapoza Thread Naming: Your Name – Fan Art Keep all questions in this thread So for this challenge, I’m keeping it simple. No mini story to get the juices flowing, just the theme. Fan Art. What’s fan art, basically, art created by fans of a certain movie, cartoon, comic. So if you are a fan of the star wars movie, you can make Darth Vader. Fan of comics, create Super Man. The timeline for this is wide open, so is the planet they live on. You can do a spot on recreation, or tweak the original to what you think it should look like. Fan Art, make it what you will. DUE DATE: April 29th, 11:59 pm GMT - SUNDAY Idea: Choose a character you are a fan of and recreate them. Pedestals/Stands: You do not have to create one, but it would be nice if you did. You can go as crazy as you want, or keep it basic. Restrictions: -Joint entries are allowed for this challenge, this means, you can have someone draw a concept for you, but you must do all the sculpting yourself. -Your entry must be specifically created for this challenge. Do not use any pieces from previous works. -You will be supplying your own base mesh for the competition, from which you will sculpt from. You can create your base mesh in any application (3dsmax, Maya, XSI, Cinema4D, Zspheres in Zbrush, etc) using any technique. Don’t use any pre-made base meshes, you must build it specifically for this challenge. -There are no lighting restrictions. -You must create a W.I.P Thread to show off your work in progress. - If you post in the final entry thread, you must also vote when the time comes. If you do not, your entry will be disqualified. Final Pictures: Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry): - A picture of the original character you are making. - 1 x Winning shot (render or screen grab). This image should consist of your object depicted in its most awesome angle. - 1 x Beauty shot (render or screen grab). Feel free to put multiple angles of your object or just one big version or your object on this page. You are free to do whatever post effects you like on this image. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you. - 1 x Construction shot of your base mesh and at least 3 shots (screen grab) of your sculpt as you work from beginning to end. Feel free to put more if you like, it’s up to you. - Concept Sheet (if you have one) - Link to your W.I.P. thread Prize(s): 1st Place - First place gets you £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable content & a gold award badge. Good luck everyone! BiG ToE. |

This is seriously an awesome challenge....
Someone should advertise this round on CGTalk, Polycount, and ZBC. These are always more fun when there are a lot of participants, and this is open ended enough to draw a lot of interest! Last edited by Jussslic; 24-02-2012 at 12:15 AM.. |

nice challenge, i am in
![]() one question, can we pick a "Fan art concept piece" that was done by another concept artist, and use that as a concept to do the sculpting?? for example: can we pick one of the Dave Rapoza's concept and sculpt it out?? or we have to find a concept artist and ask him to do a fan art concept just for the challenge, and sculpt it out? thanks!! |

I'm gonna go ahead and say this because I've noticed that at any given moment on this forum there are usually around 185 guests and only 6 or 7 members.
If you're watching this competition from the outside and wondering whether you should register and participate... DO IT! ![]() This is such a badass theme... help us make it epic! But seriously, look at my tiny post count compared to when I joined. Take it from a long time lurker... it's more fun to join in : ) Last edited by Jussslic; 28-02-2012 at 02:36 AM.. |

Hello
![]() I would like to ask a question: how is it with hair? I know some can be sculpted, but I am sure not all of it. So, does hair have to be sculpted, or are other solutions allowed? Like hair plugins? |

Mmmm that's a good question JAPO is asking there. My guess is that it would be better to sculpt the air since doing it in another app with a plugin is starting to sound more like rendering than sculpting.
BUT In Zbrush R2b the new fibers fonction let you add and sculpt fibers all inside of Zbrush, so maybe that could work? I even think one of the contestants already did some beard and eyebrows with it. |

I guess it would be ok, but I wouldn't get too crazy with it. The idea is to sculpt, not generate.
