Speed Modelling Challenge 120 - Rings

The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 18th of October 2006
Subject - Rings

Rings - Now we know that there are all different types of rings... but we are only looking for the type of rings that you wear either on your fingers... or on your toes. No other rings are allowed. No ear rings, nose rings, belly button rings, circus rings, boxing rings, ring around the collar, ringworm, etc... etc... Oh... and one more thing... We know how hard it is going to be for people to resist making, "The One Ring To Rule Them All." Although I'm not going to make a rule against it... we are hoping that you guys make some stuff that is a little more artistic, more creative, and more to the level of work we know that you are all capable of!

Have Fun and Good Luck!

Cool! Beautiful starter Rashika, very nice indeed!

Hmmm interesting idea! i might have a go at some Celtic style rings with ornate designs and the ring will only take about 5 mins to make, also a look into caustics for a nice diamond or ruby encrusted ring is needed.

Good Idea

Kind Regards

Hey guys,

Long time no see. I've been very busy at my new job but I managed to squeeze in a quick entry. Excuse the badly hacked together image I will make it look more pleasing once I get photoshop installed on my new system. I'll probably move the image hosting to my homepage too.

The ring is based off of an actual ring that I have made in real life. The ring was created with curves and converted to a mesh which is why the wire is so dense. The rings were arranged into a basic unit which was then duplicated using an array with an offset modifer. The main reason such a simple model ended up taking so much time to make was tweaking the rings in the base unit to curve in from the ceter of the band and not intertsect one another.

*Edit*
New slightly improved layout and hosted on my homepage for longevity.

nice challenge, gotta be more creative than technical this time
hope I manage to get it well textured 'coz till now I'm very less experienced at texturing 'n lighting AND these r the two things most important this time to bring out the beauty of the ring
in Speed Modelling its less modelling but more texturing 'n lighting this time that gonna work

well already there r two nice works from Rashika-3D 'n Hammering3D.

i'm very inexperienced to say that but Rashika ur artwork could have looked a leap better if u would have applied a glitter to ur ring 'n better lighting

This seems like it will be a fun week. The genius of it is a normal ring takes about 5 seconds to model, so we've really got to be creative when coming up with ideas.

Sydney05 Really impressive model and concept. How long did the real one (not the model) take to put together?

MarshallP Talk about taking the words 'more artistic, more creative' to heart. Stunning entry you've got.

evil-98 The simplicity of your ring belies the work it took to get such a nice curve there. On top of that, I normally don't like Maxwell, but I think I'll have to make an exception this time

hk21 I agree with UrsiNMC. That's a great brilliant cut you modeled for the stone, but it looks much better with the emerald shader.

I wanted to do a unique ring for this (I'm guessing it's unique 'cause I can't imagine why someone would actually make something like this). I broke my personal rule and booleaned the band with a scaled down copy, then immediately regretted it. Most of the interior was done with splines. I slapped an edit-poly modifer on the main double helix to give it more of a handmade look. The round stones are smoothed, hemisphered geospheres. I made the smaller ones by just using a chamfer box with 2 filets for that nice 'emerald cut'. And the mother-of-pearl back setting started life as a plane before I deleted a few faces and extruded it a bit. After all that, I used a bend modifier with 360 degrees, deleted the end polys from the band and welded it shut.

Software: 3DS Max
Modeling: 48 minutes

first entry

I've busy the last weeks but i didn't forgot you guys (and girls)!
About this comp:

Rashika>>very nice!
Sydney075 >>cool ring!!!(tweaking the array for circular objects is quite time consuming –maybe there will be some improvements in the next build)
MarshallP >>nice model!( Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period)
evil-98 >> Extreme man!!!
h2k1>> Good model! The materials would require more tweaking .
Trimyr >>very nice design , I love the materials
This is my entry for this comp(NO Diamonds ):

edit: explain your mesh, or it will be assumed that it is smoothed, which is
grounds for disqualification. thanks!

Edit:
step 1) i used a the deformed circle on a circle path to obtain the ring
step 2) a sphere that i scaled down on the z axis and then moved part of it inwards
Hope this clarifies thing. In the future I'll explain the models! Sorry Again!

Heya yeah i got the model done before the time, what i meant was that i had to go to class and didnt have time to finish messing around with caustics and such, oh and thanks!

Trimyr : Although you said you didnt like how you did it, i think it looks great man, you got quite a bit modeled in 60 mins, great job
