Rigging Question
Is there a good way to go about rigging an animating a chain or somthing like it realisticly in 3dsmax? I've tryed a straight line of bones but it only bends in one direction.

You'd probably be better off using IK. You'll find it'll move in every direction and look great too.

This one looks pretty good..
http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/3ddocs/iksetup/ You'll be able to apply what you learn here to what you want to do with your chain. Hope this helps. |

Spline IK for Chains
I have found that using the spline IK in Max 5 is the best method of animating chains... take all of your chain links and make sure they are linked in a proper hierarchy. Put the spline IK on it as if it was a bone system and usually set the Spline Knots to 4 for the smoothest result if you have a lot of chain links. The max user reference is pretty good for telling you how to put the Spline IK on it after they are all linked together.

Have you looked at reactor yet. If your using version 5 you could just clone the links up the line and simulate it, you could also skin the chain to a reactor "rope" and solve it. But if you don't like the whole solving situation of dynamics, the above suggested should suffice.
