Problems painting weights Max 5

Hi, I have rigged my character. My stack has an editable poly-> skin modifier->meshsmooth. I am trying to bend her in natural poses but some vertices I don't want affected are being affected, if I alter the envelope it does not affect enough. What should I do. This is only the second character I have rigged. The first one had similar problems but I edited it in post. This one is for animation and you can plainly see that the deformations are crap. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
