Just give Mental Ray a miss. I'm no expert with mental ray either. I find it awkward and slow.

Every max user should know the ins and outs of scanline. Practice! You'd be suprised at the results you can get.

Here is a scene from the animation I am working on.
The full animation is about 13 minutes long.

The clip below, is rendered in scanline.
It was re-done after the boss didn't like a little part of it, and the first render took almost 94 hours!!! (With VRay)

The second time around, with scanline & baked maps, it took about 6 hours!
