thats really good, its a much faster way than i do it, i normally start off with a quare, then i do a inset on it, then i connect it vertically once in the center and then horizontal, then i grab a 8 sided cylinder then place it on the top of my square then i use the snap tool to shape it into the circle shape. as you see its alot longer than this, thanks

Nice tutorial... I only had 3 problems with it:
1. There is no time frame so can't pinpoint certain spots in the tutorial for reference 2. When he says MESHSMOOTH, I'm thinking that he actually added the MESHSMOOTH modifier. 3. related to problem #2, he appeared to quick key, "Use NURMS Subdivision" or so it seemed because I didn't see the cursor in that area except to UNCHECK "Show Cage" I got help on on how to do this tutorial elsewhere... So, I hope the issues I pointed out helps somebody like me who got stuck in that area. Thanks. |

Ok, nice vid.
my 2 cents. Instead of Connecting Vertices, you can also use the collapse command, on at least 4 quadpolies. But keep in mind - this only works when the quads are perfectly "quad" - if each side has the same length. if thy have a rectangular shape, the hole will not be round. this applies to both methods. onl perfect squares create perfect circles! |

Very useful Luciano Iurino, most of the time for modeling tutorials, it's not the big thing like head or car modeling but the small thing that really helps in everyday modeling and this tutorial of yours should be rank amount the top for usefulness.

Hi guys,
thanks everyone for the comments & crits. @ GermX: About the timeframe, that's a good point. Maybe in the next videos! And yes, you are perfectly right: it's incorrect to say "Meshmooth", since all I did was creating a shortcut key to enable/disable Nurms Subdivision. (There will be another small video with such topic, hope it comes in handy).

great tutorial!
I tried doing similar operation in maya 2008, however the chamfer vertex operation creates a rectangular face instead of a circular one. Anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish the same thing in maya? |

Edge Selection
Hello Everyone, Quick question, is there any way to select circular edge in one go i.e. I am selecting 8 edges before I extrude it downwards, he appears to select one, then presses something (or the video just skips) and all 8 are selected? Missing something?
Thanks apolagies for the retarded question but I'm new to Max |

I just use the Border sub-object mode in the Editable Poly modifier ("3" key for shortcut) to select the hole. Off course this works on any hole in an open mesh. Hope it helps...

I was actually wondering about chamfer vertex and am a little surprised it didn't become circular with all 8 faces. You might try, extrude vertex as well and delete the resulting faces. I don't have Maya in front of me so can't play around with either at the moment. The split poly way is how I was taught to make holes so I've stuck with it for most things that aren't riddled with them. For hole intensive work (and mesh I don't really need to build on afterwards), I just use booleans or bevelplus. EDIT: I just tried both chamfer vertex and extrude and you're right...results in a square hole. Pretty easy to fix, though. Just grab the four middle vertices and scale out to create the hole (octagon shape).
