don't forget to swich to default scanline renderer cuz you'll get different result when working with the output value. With Mental Ray you have to enter an possitve value instaed of a negative.

Output amount question??

Great Tutorial! Very well documented and most of the steps are explained well.

I was hoping someone could further explain the output amount better. What does it really do? Why does a negative value give the glowing effect? I looked in the help and only found that it controls the mixing…whatever that means. A cursory internet search didn’t yield anything either.

Does someone have a good explanation for what is really going on here?

Hi Jagster, I can't help myself on this one, but you can always contact the artist who created this directly, here: ladoka[at]yahoo[dot]com. Or perhaps some other lovely forum members will help us out

Smile Output Effect explanation

Hi everyone,Jagster has sent me an email asking me to explain the output amount part in the tutorial, and I've made a video explaining that, he also suggested that the video should be held to everyone in this forum, so here it is:

Hey everyone,

This is a 18 minute long video with a lot of good information. Check it out, it's fun to play with the various settings!

Hi Ladokar, thanks for creating this new video! If you want to send us the movie file we could see about hosting it on the 3DTotal server so that it can continue to be downloaded by our forum users. Just a thought

What programming languages and compilers are compatible with Autodesk 3DS Max 9? I am an amateur video game maker, and I have some experience with Autodesk 3DS Max 9 Student Edition. I would like to make a first person game with Autodesk, but I need a programming language and a compiler that I can use with it. Please do not worry agout how easy the language is to use.

Ive had a bit of a problem with this one. I use Max 2009. Everything is fine until i get the the diffuse mapping. It doesnt show the two colours orange and yellow. The flames only come up as bright yellow and thats it .
The tutorial is really well written and i have followed it to the letter but this bit has got me stumped.

Sorry guys,
The problem is that I don't receive any email notifications with new replies on the thread though my "Receive Instant Email Notifications" in my account options is checked on

I received one email by 3dTotal, and I gladly wish to help put the information video available in this thread, it's just that the file is 28.4 MB video, I tried to upload it on rapidshare but they don't afford but few download chances since I have no premium account.

As for addappt and those who want the tutorial to fit with Mental Ray, here is the way to manage that:

Wish you all luck

Hi, we should be able to host the tutorial for you on our server if you can send it my way. Drop me an email and I'll set you up with access to our ftp and you can send us the movie, and we can then give a download link here in the forum.
