You can do an edge ring select in edge mode by holding CTRL+ALT and then selecting an edge. You can also work in more than one mode at a time by holding the SHIFT key and clicking the mode buttons.
There is yet another very useful selection method - paint select. You can access it by pressing the B key twice. When you do an extrude command and then cancel it, the extruded geometry will pop back to its origin and will not get removed. You do not need to eyeball it into place.
