Starcraft II Reaper
Hey everyone! Been a while since I've posted anything (especially anything worth looking at)
It's great to be back and productive again. I've finally finished this guy after a few months of painstaking work. First off, I have to give complete and total credit to brilliant folks over at Blizzard, Samwise Didier in particular, for the concept art and the background of the Reaper unit that inspired me to create it. As well as Fausto DeMartini, who's Starcraft Marine model Hugely impressed and motivated me to try and make something along the same lines as well. I've started with some rough sketches of some armor designs, like the boots. Then made the model in Max, and actually decided to rig it in order to pose it later. Brought it in pieces into ZBrush, improved the folds of the cloth parts, set the final perspective of the composition and went on to add the fine detail like the battle damage on the metal parts and texture of the cloth and leather bits. After that was done, I've exported several renders with different matcaps applied and composited them in photoshop. The last step, after I was fairly happy with the composition, was going back to 3DS Max and creating the jet flames with Afterburn. Aside from the attached images shown, I have a different version of the final picture for the more die-hard Starcraft lore fans (aka geeks) like myself. 1600x1200 ver.2 Thank you for looking at my post! Please enjoy and let me know what you think. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Ryfox; 23-10-2009 at 05:07 AM.. |

haha, i like the rammstein logo on his gear... my only crit is for the final image - the lighting needs some work, cause the flames don´t cause any illumination on the character.
other that that - great piece of orsumness ![]()

Super duper man. I just loved it. Especially the metal texture. I just want to ask one thing... Looking at the boosters, do you think that it should be more far apart from the body? It is giving me a feeling that the amount of fire it is generating, the arms will get burnt. I might be wrong. Besides that, you did a fantastic job. Keep it up.

Very well done. I like this rendition of the Reaper much better than what is in the SC2 site. I do think that there must be something in between the exhaust flames and the arm to keep from getting burned. But oh well, something tells me that the suit is fire-resistant, anyway.

Thank you for all the feedback guys, I really appreciate it!
Mantis: Great catch on the Rammstein logo - I did not expect many people to pick up on that. Reason it's there is I used them as a motif and inspiration during the concept process of the project, because I figured it's the kind of stuff a Reaper would be into ![]() Very good point on the flame lighting in relation to the character. I've updated the image a little bit to reflect that issue. Something I will keep in mind on the next project for sure. Avi & Sgt: I agree on the design question of the jetpacks' proximity. I thought the same thing when looking at the Blizzard concept art for them, but pretty soon got over it and chose to suspend disbelief in favor of the 'cool' factor I think. I'm with you guys on that, though. Last edited by Ryfox; 24-10-2009 at 03:57 AM.. |

this just makes me want SC2 even more. great work man. my only crit would be that the material of the helmet and trousers look a bit bland and the detail you put in them is totally lost in the final image.
but yeah, Rammstein fits these guys nice touch

Sweet! Excellent work. Textures look good!
There's something with the folds that I find strange, especially on the straight left leg. Also there is too much smoke coming out of his jet pack. It looks like some burning oil. Jet pack in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHG9Ftg5PgQ
