Modelling characters for animation (Maya)

Probably not a Maya specific question, but when modelling characters which are later to be rigged for posing, and/or animation, how are clothes done?

Is it necessary to use something like nCloth (or similar for other software)? I haven't learnt about nCloth yet, but is it something to be applied afterwards or should you be aware of it whilst modelling (and therefore, take considerations with the geometry used for clothes).

if it's related, a sub-question : would it be necessary to use something like nCloth to animate a character changing clothes? Like pulling a sweatshirt on and off.

danke
