simple answer - unwrap stuff properly

in maya this is difficult because the standard UV tools are pathetic. there are lots of scripts and addons available (ninja dojo - or similar name - has what looks to be a lot of good tools) as well as third party apps such as headus UVlayout

if you don't know how to unwrap properly then read some tutorials or post back up here with specific examples/ pictures etc so's we can help you out. There's no magic bullet (unless you're using max)

I use the plugin Road Kill, its similar to uvlayout but simpler and free.
After using Maya for 4years now I'm really starting to see how much Autodesk has neglected it... will eventually move over to max.

well if you texture it wiseley seems shouldnt be visible, but for future i'll give a tip - when unwrapping place your seems in areas that has less visual contact. in this case inner side of fins, whales belly.....

Also.

You should check out 3D painting packages.

Mudbox does a good enough job for texturing, bodypaint's an outdated blessing.

But, when You UV map, thereŽll always be seams.

But like Paulius said, put the seams where it's less likely to be seen.

yeah, shoot it with a big gun.
ok, more serious now, there is now killing seems way. just overpaint textures borders cause you can get black lines where you have seems.
and if you want that seem at other place just reunwrap your model and place your seem in place where you want.
its uvw unwrapping and there is no easy way -do it properley or suffer the consequences latter.

I use to hate the UV tools in Maya but I figured out a really good workflow and now it's relatively painless (It's hard to type out, I would have to record a video to show you some techniques). I can't point you in the direction of any tutorials because I haven't been able to find any really good ones.
