1. Make your standard strands of grass (more, the merrier) - these will be repeated. multiple textures on the same model can help (live vs dead grass...borders... muddy grass..) You really only need 1 texture page, and then use different parts of it for different models, but experts will argue.

2. Make your near-camera and signature weeds/rocks/grass

3. Take one strand at a time and place them....

ok, that might be a bit unrealistic...

3-a. take your individual strands and make patches (with space between the grass, each patch doesn't need to be a solid piece) Patches should contain x amount of pieces depending on how you evaluate your work in step 1. Make as many patches as your patience can bear.

3-b. LOD your patches... its about to get heavy. you know.. display as box.

4. place and overlap the patches (that's why theres space... for variance) after you place each one, un-LOD that version - and check to make sure no parts are floating or whatever.

4-a (optional) make large patches of your patches, and vary that up

5. place your near grass and key feature items.

6. clean up - after setting up your camera shot, go through and get rid of obvious defects, as well as creating life - dead areas, weeds, tall areas, cut vs not cut.

The more practice the better.
