Lavoir

Things slowed down just briefly at work recently and I saw an opportunity to create some personal artwork again. This was a really fun project and allowed me to learn Mari which I'm pretty happy with.

Everything was modeled in 3dsMax and rendered with Vray. Textures were either created in nuke or Mari. Surprisingly, this is the first project I've ever done that didn't require any photoshop at all. Compositing was done in Nuke. The final render was done at 4k. Below is a link to a breakdown that shows the raw renders and the comp build up. I've also included a link to a higher res render.

I also had just enough time before work got busy again to update my demo reel which I haven't done in years. You can check it out at the link below.

Thanks for viewing!

Nice work mate, it looks very real.
The only thing that doesn't look convincing is the vines on the left.
Keep up the good work.

My only critique is having hi-res mesh of the stones on the walls like you have around the border of the water. Looks a bit flat, but great job!!!

wow fantastic work! thanks for posting the breakdown, love the exposure range in the final comp. My only critique is that the stones on the wall could have a little more depth. 2 questions, I see you rendered out a bunch of mattes, did you use all of them and make tweaks to all the layers? What did you use for all of the plant generation?

The plants were from an archmodels collection as well as some grass from an icube collection of grass models. The ivy was done with ivy generator.

I did not make use of all of the multimattes, but I render them just in case I need them. For this image I mostly used them for fine adjustments to the diffuse buffer to get some of the texture maps looking how I wanted them and getting them closer to the same world color wise. I also used them for just a couple tweaks to the reflection amount of a few objects. I used them to remove the occlusion effect from the plant leaves as well. I barely used the occlusion buffer. Maybe only at 5% just to get a tiny bit more detail in the corners.

Really it is one of the greatest works I've ever seen, and this is really injecting the audience a feeling of realism.

That's great but i don't get how you could let that bricks on the wall to look so unrealistic. They look like 2D, without any displacement.
