Thanks guys
![]() Coming to a position where I almost have new updates, but damn I'm having issues modeling the battery compartment at the minute, even though when closed it won't be seen. However, I did originally have an animation planned when I started to model the Xbox controller back when I used Max years ago, but been so many changes/revisions since then. Didn't really want to update until I had some new updates but I better thank you all first, as its taken me so long, and don't want you all to think I don't care about comments and such because I do ALOT. Thanks Needse, & McFly for the comments on the buttons. Really was worth the effort to get those looking the way they do, and I really appreciate the comments ![]() Novak, thanks. I do lose faith in myself a lot but I am getting there, and I was on a roll, but I don't know whats happened. I've hit a point where I'm not getting as much done as I would like, and seeing little errors I'm having to correct before moving on. Thinking I'm going to model one day and I don't do anything until really late on. Once I've finished this battery piece, I can move onto the console, which hopefully won't take as long. Heres hoping anyway. I'm still however stuck with the old model, but its something at least. You know what I'm like by now though lol, but I'm plodding along. Seriously hate how almost obsessed I become over little things though. Updates ASAP. If I can kick myself, maybe I'll have a battery compartment update tonight, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that, but I do need to just push myself. Possibly need to give myself deadlines like I have to with paid work to get it done faster, because at the moment, I'm seeing weeks pass where I've hardly done anything on it, but have been meaning to all those weeks, as its only with personal work I have this issue

Sick job mate, the analogs are flawless and the buttons look great, in fact it looks just like my xbox pad,.. except for the dark silver on the big button at the center, I don't think it's working for it.
Now where's the update?

Thanks for the comment Sparktan118. I agree. Hopefully the shader looks better now?
![]() Just to let you know this isn't forgotten and is still being worked on. The battery compartment is proving a pain but its getting there. Made quite a lot of progress tonight but its not ready to show yet. Need to do some cleaning up. Just a shader/render test of one of the black varients. All Modo 401 for modeling and rendering, and some Gimp for brightness adjustments/adding that glow at the back to blend. Just a test but I hope you like it ![]() Lighting consists of 3 lumigons (+ 4 on the light ring, but of course, only 2 are lit right now) and 4 standard directional lights ![]() It's certainly getting there I hope you agree. Still the compartment inside to finish where the batteries go, which may or may not ever be seen, but I could make an animation for my reel I hope to finish at some point. Hopefully this work will put it in good stead as a start off point. Then of course comes the console itself...still!!! I'm going to start making a schedule though. At the moment I'm working practically all day on it on my days off when I'm free and mostly staring at it. I feel if I set myself targets, and hours to work per day I'll make the progress much faster. It may explain why I tend to work when freelancing a lot faster than doing personal works. Comments/crits of course welcome

Great shader Kage! I admire your dedication to this project too. Can't wait to see the console itself as you said.

Thanks McFly and ClassicGamer
![]() Updates soon. Turns out the render above is half of one variant and half of another haha, plus I'll have to be careful finishing off the battery compartment as their has been 3 different circuit board's. Matrix, CG1 & CG2

Admit it, you're pushing the deadline so you won't model the console.
Now imagine Walter Sobchak talking to you saying "Am I wrong? Am I wrong?" ![]()

Guess what?
I've started work on the console!!! Such a surprise I know! Not been feeling myself as of late. Very down, etc, so I'm sorry for lack of updates. Modo is such a weird program in the way it handles sub-D's. I had to try many different approaches to cut into the mesh. It actually handles some 5 sided polys better than it handles quads with multiple poles. If I made quads in a couple of places, I got dents due to the points meeting at certain points. Something that never happened in Max. I tried first creating a box, and then dividing it up into polys that was pretty linear and constant but matching up to the lines I had created, knowing that I was going to curve it. I then tried cutting and then curving it, and this actually didn't produce very nice results at all.. I then went back to the drawing board, and did the same with the dividing but curved first, and then cut into it. The result was a whole lot better after sorting out the 4 sided poly issues. Why I get issues when using 4 sided polys on a curved mesh, compared with a few 5's I don't know, but Modo doesn't use the best algorithm in my opinion. At least in 401. I have 601 now, but don't want to port over a half finished project. Anyway, heres a screeny I've put together ![]() ![]() Heres some more renders of the controller with the battery attachment, that I didn't want to upload without starting work on the console itself ![]() The battery attachment was a pain to do. Especially the top portion with the slight dip ![]() Clicky for full: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b9...ithbattery.jpg ![]() Clicky for full: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b9...rbatteryx2.jpg Hope you like! I guarantee I will finish this... Just hope you lot are not bored ![]()

God I love your modelling, just makes me wanna cry...... I don't think i could model it this accurately!
I know how you feel about feeling down matey, felt that way myself & hardly modelled a thing apart from SMC's, I must get back into it. This is just looking flawless, outstanding work......makes me wanna check out Modo just for the realistic renders if nothing else ![]()

Now that's really looking good matey. Did you model those ">>>" indents near the top of the controller?

ClassicGamer-3DT, thanks
It's certainly not 100% accurate, but considering how long its took me so far, it should be! I do follow blue prints (more like photos) but its the perspective in the photos that make it hard to accurately model.Even with how the renders have been coming out, I do miss Vray... But I'm still learning the in's and outs. Modo itself is pretty good though as a modeler. I have 601 but haven't even attempted to really use it yet. The cut tool has to be the most annoying aspect, as you can't cut through multiple edges at once. That has apparently been sorted in 601 with a pen tool setting, but its still not perfect in its execution by the sounds of it. Just throw yourself back in there ![]() McFly, thanks, I promised I would get to it ![]() The top of the controller is the only portion that uses displacement. The Microsoft and the >>> are all textures. The mesh in my opinion would have to have been too dense to have modeled all of them in. EDIT: I posted the set on Gamespot UK, and the thread was locked... I asked for a reply on why as I couldn't find any other part of the forum except for offtopic, and haven't got a response. One comment stated that he doesn't believe they are 3D models...

I think I've reached almost final renders on the controller at least. Back renders soon, and hopefully spins, and detachment renders.
Here are a few test shots of the new shaders/lighting. No HDRI has been used. It's all lumigons/directional lights. I'd like to think I've reached photographic realism in a studio at least. I think maybe contrast in parts could do with some work (to produce more blacks) but I like it. No chromatic effects to speak of btw ![]() Small renders to view here: ![]() ![]() Please click, and again on Photobucket to see 1080p full versions ![]() ![]() ![]() Any replies are welcome. This is all taking longer than I thought, but I'd like to think I'm learning a whole lot. I'm actually rather excited actually for what I've achieved. A happy day at work tomorrow for sure
