Now I have something to say that begins with 'back in my day...'

Unfortunately, I'm still not working in 3d, never had much luck there. I'm doing system maintenance and IT work for a communications company. Not my first choice, but it's a good environment, and at least it's closer to 3d than gutting fish is. (Money is pretty good too.)

Still doing the odd freelance job, but nothing fulltime.

I really don't understand why you're not getting work mate. I'd employ you like a shot if circumstances allowed - even if you do use silly software.

On the other hand, doing your hobby for a living can really kill your love for it...

for me it's just the money thing, don't think i could get the same amount of $ at the end of the month as a 3D generalist or what have you as opposed to currently being an education manager/instructor...

But my love lies within 3D more, hopefully full time job would fuel it more, rather than dimming it

It depends on the day I find - sometimes I come home wishing I could stay at the office and carry on working, on other projects I mainly just want to murder whoever accepted the job in the first place and then storm out in a huff.

I'm not sure I could stomach doing nothing but modelling as so much of it is the same ****e over and over again. The best thing about being a TA/TD is that it can be a pretty varied job - especially as I range across the whole spectrum from rigging to developing tools and designing pipelines to helping design render engines. As a result I don't really have time to get sick of anything specific.

I think you put it in the perspective most of us feel comfortable - again i would wish to do nothing more that to be in the middle of nowhere with a beast of a PC modelling all day for strictly me or projects that i choose and without a pressing deadline... However if i would be struck by cabin fever sooner than expected, so variety is the thing needed the most - especially with creative people doing creative stuff.

However those non-productive meetings where i'm fed BS sometimes give me the impulse to get that cabin i spoke of earlier and disregard the rest, fever or no fever
