Thanks TekNeek for that tutor, going straight to my favorite :-)
I stepped back a few steps and returned to basics with this hand painting - I tried to pick up some simple shape with big plane so I can draw on it and learn myself some wood and metal painting. I took inspiration from certain WoW shield. Pretty happy with it. Still wip, I have some unused UV space, so I will put in some stuff to break the symmetry It's not technically a weapon, but if Cordero is against this, I will not delete it. I will make this shield, drive to his home and show him how this could be used as a weapon ![]()

Ding dong, I am final here.
Experimented with overall look, added details bit here and there and finally - I gave that shield straps. Shields loves straps. What ya think?

You Could Even use the Rest of the space to put in some kind of emblem or something in the middle, to break the symmetry further.
Thinking the logo for each races in Starcraft, or something. Otherwise, it's gravy ![]()

I would be tempted to shift the unwrapping coordinates slightly for one of the straps too as they both obviously use the same mapping space at the moment which is a little distracting
Nice work everyone ![]()

^^ agreed
I made a start on something last night as my arm is mostly fixed. Only got as far as unwrapping but will hopefully get a decent crack at texturing it before the week is out This thread is vital to the future of the industry ![]() |

artpanda.co.uk, huh? so it's from Jonathan Fletcher
on of the best of the best of the best an icon.. made a quick paintover, i hope it helps! - you could push it a bit further with adding soft occluded shadows around bigger forms, like those metal thingies there. imagine if it's lit by a little spotlight at the top and paint your shadows according to that (2nd pic) - for the edge i'd suggest you to chose between using the benifit of the low poly model's sharp shape (3rd pic) or just faking it like it was a curvy form (4th pic) either way is fine, just don't mix to two, coz it looks strange ![]() |

Thanks guys for the input, really helpfull :-)
TekNeek: Been thinking of that before you mentioned. I am thinking maybe some feathers or emblem or mask... I have few ideas, will see which work the best Perversonality: Could you please explain your idea bit further? I am not sure if I get it correctly tsabszy: Whoa, thanks dude :-D I can see that I can push it much further just with some shadows occlusion. You are right with that 3) and 4) picture - mixing looks bit odd. I am going with 3), I like it more :-) Will post an update when I get home (I am on vacation for next 4 days, no PC :-( ), once again thank you all!

I would probably need to draw something out to explain it well and I've only got a misbehaving copy of Paint.Net on my work PC, but basically if you had a rectangle for the strap texture then one of the straps could use the bottom 2/3 of the texture and the other could use the top 2/3. This would mean that the same texture would be used for both straps but they would look different in terms of where the marks appear on each strap, only appearing the same where the UV spaces overlap in the middle 1/3

Perversonality: Will try that, thanks for explanation, I get it now :-)
Small update on the textures as tsaszby suggested. Much more satisfied with it!

Zlatovous great job mate! it looks a lot better now imo. maybe it would be better to avoid using coal-black shadows, but rather use some slightly brighter colored one coz it helps the painty, or fresh feel
but it's only a matter of taste great job! keep it up Cordero went silent? i wonder what he's doin' now.. not finishing his toothpick ![]() |
