You have amazing work. I was wondering if you could give us some coloring tips. I usually start with an outline, then shade in black and white values, after that, my color ends up being sub par.
Any advice?

@ Vitrux - Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!! Much appreciated!
@ setschaos - Thanks a bunch for the kind words. For sure!!! @ eydi - Thank you! And you're welcome as well :9 Ok - I 'll try to bring my progress into some words. Basically I didn't do a lot of B/W or simple grey scale/value sketches. Most of the time I start pretty rough - just by blocking in shapes or staring with a simple line drawing. the drawings are mostly rough and sketchy. If I'm happy with the overall look - I start to block in the colors (when doing line sketches) or define the colors a bit. But what I really do in the beginning is to define my color palette. Just some simple swatches somewhere on the image. Those swatches are on a separate layer - what gives me the option to switch them on and off. Based on that colors I start to add more and more shades to it. Those shades are basically nothing else then the main color and some tweaks on the saturation, hue and brightness. Also I'm using a lot the color picker for any further progress. One good thing is to implement some complementary colors to you image. I'm trying to find a good balance between war,s and colds. but this depends on the image itself. Another great tool to work with is the color balance. this give you the option to change color just in the heights, midds and shadows. I always using it as a separate layer or as a layer effect. To bring some more variation into your image, you could also use a layer, set to soft light and use a ramp or simple some brush strokes. Keep this one as a separate layer and you'll be able to change the transparency to your specific needs. To bring some nice highlights to your image - use the burn/dodge tool. Hope this will be a bit of help. If not and more peeps are interested, I could try to do some sort of tutorial or a screen cap. Just let me know… ![]() Ok - here's number eight. What means that I have still four to paint. Hehe - four time fun for me )Hope you'll like this one as well and enjoy looking at "Mon général" Best |

I did some step-by-step thing for the last one. Not sure if this will be helpful, but at least you'll see how the colors changing during the progress and that I have the color palette already defined at the beginning

Yes, that was very helpful. The step by step is easy to pick out the different choices you made during the process, when you cleaned it up, when you decided to make value changes, ect. Thank you so much, very helpful!
Excellent work. I do have one thing to add, your last three puppets look very similar, compared to the different designs from before. Spice it up some! ![]() And I liked the crown from the concept hehe

@ eydi - Thanks! And you're welcome
![]() @ setchaos - You're welcome as well. Thanks for pointing it out. The new ones will differ from the rest. For the last three I had in mind to have their closer to the rest. Sort of family.thing I'm planning to do some screen cap for the next puppet. If its done - I'll post the link to the video up here![]() After a bunch of puppets I had to do some landscape… It's interesting how hard it is to step out of your comfort zone and how hard it is to step back into it again. Hope you'll like it anyways… |

I did another puppet. Three more and all the images for the upcoming calendar are done
. It's still a WIP
Also I did a video demo from this image. Just a pretty simple screen cap, no audio But I guess it will give a small glance on how I work especially on this images. video_chapter_one This is chapter one, which basically shows the initial process, the blocking in and some details. Chapter two, which is coming pretty soon, will show the final detailing and tweaking. Thanks for watching and hope you'll enjoy it. Cheers |
