Zbrush model import concern

Just signed up here and recently trying to get back into modeling. I'm new to zbrush and can't figure out what is going on with my model. Modeled in Maya, imported into zbrush with no errors. As the pictures indicate, while mousing over my brush containing my imported model, the model looks whole. Once I place the model on the canvas I get this strange xray effect where I can't see the outside but only the inside. Any guidance would be very helpful.

Your normals for the body is inverted, looks like.

Go in Maya and turn off two sided lighting

you can find it here in the toolbar for the viewport.

select the object and Delete the history ( Alt+D if I remember correctly, haven't sued maya in ages)

The black faces you'll see have their normal facing inwards instead of outwards. To fix this go to Normal in the polygon menu (I presume you'll see it when you press space). I don't have Maya in front of me, sorry.

You can try pressing Average Normals, or you can select all of the black faces and Reverse them.

Reimport to Zbrush and enjoy

since this is maya...

check the object has positive transforms as well

basically if you freeze and reset all transforms then delete the history you should be in a position to fix whatever normals are facing the wrong way. if you don't do that, then you could still find some or all of them are pointing the wrong way after export.

Next time you have this problem, just find "display properties" under "tools" in zbrush and flick "flip" or "double"

That's a workaround but not a good fix if you're dealing with a model with busted transforms or other weirdness going on. Garbage in, Garbage out ...
