The Abandoned Morgue

Hey Everybody,

It's been a while since I've posted in here. I am really excited start showing off one of my projects that I've been working on. Its been a project I've worked on over the past few months in my free time. I really wanted to use this project to improve on my texturing and lighting skills. In the near future, I am looking to make this into a demo reel piece by the time I'm done with it. So I am looking for any critiques or things I can improve on. I still have some props to add, grass popping through geometry and things to texture for sure.

I am currently using 3d Studio Max, Vray, Photoshop and 3d-Coat. Thanks ahead of time for any crits or comments.

Lookin good so far! There is grass but no other plants popping out. Perhaps you could add some ferns and weeds instead of just grass to break up the ground more? Also because of how long it has been abandoned, it may help to add some decay and rot to the wood areas.

Thanks for the suggestions angry monkey and xtrm3d.

Yeah, I've been going back and forth on keeping that grass. I was using a grass pluggin but it makes it all look too uniform. I would totally agree I need to take a step back and model some grass and other plants for it.

I'll have a new update here soon.

How are you lighting this scene? Vray sun/sky? Is the sky outside composited in later?

You have a nice scene and your halfway there in my opinion.

Your scene lighting is looking a little flat. Its probably a combination of a few things that all lead back to proper exposure and realistic brightness values.

1. If you were to photograph this environment and expose the camera for the areas that are not directly hit by sunlight then the areas that are being directly hit by sun would be blown out completely.

2. The sky outside the window would also be blown out completely. Check out the image below which shows both the sun and sky brightness for an interior scene similar to yours.

3. There appears to be very little reflection/spec in your render. If the sun and sky were the appropriate brightnesses then you would probably see a lot more in the way of reflection even in a dusty/dirty scene like this.

4. Some atmosphere would really help this. Some subtle rays coming in through the holes in the roof.

5. I don't think the grass is working for you in this case. There wouldn't really be any soil in here and currently its growing straight out of the tiles in individual strands. I think its best to remove it completely, or at least group them better and in places that would make more sense.

6. The piles of stones/dirt doesn't make much sense to me either. Why would it be there? Why is it randomly in some places and not in others. If your going to include a layer of dirt/soil then think about how it got there in the first place and how it would naturally build up in some areas and not others.

Hope this is helpful.
