Hello I was wondering if anyone could give me some rendering advice? (I really have no idea what I'm doing) I'm not going to have time to do any sort of background or scene so I would like just like to make a studio style render similar to what Jussslic has done. I set up the curved room thing and am trying to use mental ray rendering in 3ds max. Does anyone have any advice on how to set up the lights and renderer?

Glassdevil: In Maya + MR I typically use two area lights with the use light shape setting turned on. Then I increase the number of shadow rays until everything is nice and soft. Not sure if those things apply in Max.
The other thing I sometimes do for a really diffuse looking render like the one I posted is just skip the curved backdrop and just have a plane under the model to pick up the shadows... then composite it onto a nice flat or slightly gradiated background in PS. You have to make sure you render an alpha channel to do it this way. |

Maybe your dragon would look more good with a different background color...

glassdevil, you just need a matte/shadow material on a plane and if you have a light, shadow will be projected on it while background will show through, just like it looks on Jussslic's piece.

xxxcubanxxx, nice update, I like the new boots
![]() tongert, I think it is possible to generate them from cavity or bump maps. Look for xNormals, it's a software to generate AO and normal maps. I use to do it by having a high polygon model with all the detail projected into a light poly model. But some kind of faking can be done from bump maps aswell. I don't know how accurate the result is but give it a try. |

Adroit looking good, some suggestions if I may, since the dragon itself is red/orange, I think it would be best to change the color of the background and rock so the dragon can stand out, cause right now it's all blending together.

Hi guys!
Adroit.jrk, I agree with xxxCubanxxx, I'd try to highlight the main subject of an image (in this case your dragon) over anything else. Try with opposite colors, light, saturation... I'll really appreciate your opinion now mates, I'm not sure at all about this but on a dramatical turn I changed my mind, and this happened: ![]() The dragon needs a better render but that's what I had and just felt the need to watch it all together. |

Wil change the clouds to 3D. They don't compliment the rest of the scene in 2D.

I agree with astroAJ clouds don't fit the rest of the comp right now, also don't go too crazy with the depth of field
