Question Game Engine

Hi guys!
Me and a couple of my friends have decided to make a game of our own, where I will be the 3d artist/animator and the others will be the developers. Since I know a bit of 3d and they know programming, could anyone please suggest how we should start out. That is, which game engine out there you recommend we should study to start development.

The main character is supposed to be the one I did for my school project recently. I had very little time to complete the animation, so it's not as good as it should be, but you guys can catch him in action at

Game engines are very expensive to license, so unless either one of you guys is a millionaire, I'd say either make your own engine, or just give up the idea of creating a game. Many of the good engines easily cost 100k us dollars just to license, and then you still need to pay for support and add on modules and stuff like that.

Thumbs up

That animation was great!! I love it! Don't see how that can become a game, but maybe more animated shorts are called for.

Try DarkBasic.. It's like around $50, but there's a free trial to see if you like it.. darkbasic.com

Darkbasic is the excellent choice. Don't let the name fool you. It is one of the best around, and the price of 50 bucks is a steal. Just try the free version and you'll know i am not bluffing.

Go and look at screens of some of the games... Several are very, very, very impressive.

i use darkbasic and 3dgs a6...both r cool...darkbasic i think is the easiest to learn(maybe),learn it several ours u can get the idea on how db work...3dgs is also ok,c-script is hard to learn but once u get the idea the all the thing is the same...but making level with bsp limit can sometime limit our 3d modelling ability, since A6 rely on bsp with all primitive to make levels;p

I have c and c++ knowledge so darkbasic was more than just easy and the integration of direct3d was never easier. With the advanced controls you'll be amazed at what you can achieve. The pro version has various models, sprites, sounds etc. It's all unncecessary.

If you want "professional game" quality, then learn c++ then visual c++ and then directx which is more confusing than a nasa console.

Opengl is more easy than directx and if you spend the time, it is well worth it. Making a good engine is not an easy task, but patience makes perfect.

for experience programmer ,db is more than just easy;p i admit it...but i prefer 3dgs a6,not as easy as db(maybe still easy for c,c++user),i learn it 2 month ago(i never programmed b4), a now i am ready to make level, i already have all code needed for games like FF...turnbased rpg i learn 3ds max ,4 month ago...i know i am fast;p
So my suggestion, learn db,classisc o pro,a5 o a6,since making engine with advance language for programming noob is pain in the a$$,learn a basic programming, when u get the idea u can advanced to others,if u r targetting not only to gaming than C,C++ is a long term choice...oh,a6 uses c-script(combination of C++ and javascr)
