Russian Soldier

Hi guys, just a quick pots to see what people think of my Russian soldier for a RTS game I'm helping with. I need to add colours to the texture (I'm still working out the coliour scheme) and obviously the gun needs a little more work, but he's very nearly there.

He's about 300 polys and took about 4 hours to build and texture.

I thought 300 polys was alright - the square arms are a testament to how tough it is to work with a strict poly contraint!

The wireframe looks more complex than it actually is as it's showing the back of him too.

Trappist Funk, nice model for a low poly to a game.... but i dont think that the wireframes are complex.... its simple, just how it has to be (... for a game).......

cheers....

Is there a way in 3D max to render the wire frame and the smooth mesh at the same time??? This would show the line segments on the mesh smooth. Does that make sence? Nice model by the way.

MR. BROWN, i don't know if the max have such tool (i think that no)... but i prefer work in the render's image (wireframe and mesh) with photoshop, fireworks 'cause i can make the transitions the way i like it better... the way i prefer.....

you mean like "faced edged" in the viewpoint?
the texture is good, the creases are in the right places, and the model itself if perfect for an RTS game. As downup said, it is really good detail for that polycount.

Hmm... Nice model, i still think you can lose a few polys by optamizing the head area and the back of the jacket (even loosing 5 polys is gonna count when your PC tries to display 150 of these at the same time)

Good And Efficient work

To get a wireframe render of your model in max without using a material with the wire option checked in the 'shader basic parameters', you need to go into the 'rendering' tab (press y to get your tab panel.) There you will find a button that says preview. It brings up a dialog that has a buch of stuff, what you want to do is:
  1. select 'Custom Range' and set it from 0 to 1 (can't do 0 to 0 it won't work)
  2. set the 'Percent of Output' to a size you want.
  3. select what you want to show in the 'Display in Preview' area, I generally just do geometry.
  4. IMPORTANT! Rendering Level, this is where you set it to display what you want, do Wireframe. (I know really hard to figure out.)
  5. IMPORTANT, DOING THIS IS A MUST! select Custom File Type
  6. Select the Veiwport you want
  7. click create
  8. Now you can save it as a JPG, you will get two jpegs if you set the custom range from 0 to 1, they will be apended with 00x on the end but that is okay. Delete one and rename the other.

There you have a better wireframe image than rendering a material with the wire option set.

Mr. Brown using this method you could render the image that way. Instead of doing the wireframe, your do a 'Smooth + Highlights' and make sure you have the 'edged faces' (F4) options in the viewport configuration selected for the port you want to render from.

By the way nice looking model, I like the style.

I love the style. It looks like cartoon but disturbed at the same time. Got anymore like this?

I'd say tan and red for his colors, like every other russian soldier.

Thanks for the positive responses guys - I'll be working on some more like this in the near future.

sarN - yeah, I've given him a mask. It was originally just going to be a plain cloth mask, but added the lines to make it a little more 'interesting'. Amy more models I do in the series will have similar mask with different style markings. Probably
