Hard to argue with the basic premise, that's for sure. One should probably point out that while the amount of time *spent* building these fancy visuals has remained largely unchanged (because we keep making them fancier and fancier), the *cost* of that time spent has increased at ... not quite a geometric rate?

It's easy enough to say where the dividing line is between "enough" and "not quite" with certain types of visual effects. This is particularly true with people...where it's either enough and we can't tell the difference, or it's not and it's very strange looking. However, the same cannot be said of all the various technical effects. But in some respects, we're already crossing that threshold (just look at the HW demos recently)...we're simply getting bogged down in the "We can make it more real-er!" phase that resets the bar. Why are we using 50 polygons and and eight 16k res image maps when 10 and a single 4k is indistinguishable??

Fluid dynamics and simulation is another area that I'm wondering *if* the amount of horsepower being thrown at making it "real" is simply overkill. Are the globular-clusters worth of polygons making the Jaegers in Pacific Rim really necessary? And what about the gigabytes worth of texture data all crafted with a high degree of hands-on work? Are we *ever* so close that we might actually *almost* see a pixel?

Have we become needlessly enamored of the "MORE POWER!" mentality that we're losing sight of the reason and purpose of the work itself?

I think I know the answer to that question...and you can see it far more clearly when you look at how small-budget films are making use of the existing technology...in a manner that is practical, affordable, and most importantly of all *realistic*.
