WIP - Crawler
K.. this is a continuation of my WIP - Battlemech thread. I am starting another thread for it as the mesh/design/etc got rather drastically changed...
Here are the 6 legs for the crawler: I've yet to decide whether to place footpads, or to leave the legs as is... I've also been considering placing a "shell" over the legs, to protect/hide some of the components.... Opinions, etc Note: The legs will b quite a bit more spread apart in the center area. There are shown as is only to denote progress so far.. Last edited by riker3667; 05-03-2004 at 04:04 PM.. |

Thanks. I am planning to animate this mesh, when I get the sucker done...
I'm planning to run a camera track from the inside, out & around/over so I am trying to get alot packed inside ![]() Here's what I've done on the body since my last post: For those that are curious, here's the wireframe of that pic: ![]() BTW: I wil likely need ALOT of help animating this. Files & LOTS of appreciation for upcoming assistance ![]() As always, comments/critiques, etc welcome.. This is my first really large project for myself so I am striving to get it REALLY great looking when it's complete. Last edited by riker3667; 05-03-2004 at 04:05 PM.. |

nice idea... i like the concept!
i know its real early stage... just wanted to know how will the crawler move forwards? do the legs have that kinda freedom to move forward and backwards? |

Once I've finished the mesh itself I'll start in on TRYING to get it all animated. At the moment, each hip has a 60 degree arc of movement on the Z axis: Click here to see the 871 Kb avi file. ![]() ![]() Plus each joint below the hip has a generous rotation radius: ![]() I've yet to add in the foot pads to the legs. They'll probably have a 40-50 Degree arc as well.. (once I figure out they're design..lol) Last edited by riker3667; 05-03-2004 at 04:05 PM.. |

Hmm, maybe I am missing something, but isnt this over engineered?
Wouldnt 1 joint enable it to walk in exactly the same way with the other 2 joints fixed? 1 joint to lift the leg, 1 joint to move it forward/backwards?

1) with the extra joints, I can extend the object's footprint 2) It looks better this way (in my opinion ) |

i saw the avi clip you did...
its good, but i think there is something un real about the 2 supports of 60 degrees axis... well, if they are there to push and pull... they should contract and relax (increase & decrease in lenght) but i dont think so it does in the animation. or maybe i couldnt notice it... anways, ur doing a great job...keep workin on it. and keep us posted ![]() |

I'm assuming you are referring to the "hydraulic pistons" on the joints for the legs.
These do move, but only in rather a small way (hard to see in the full image. I made a quick avi with the joint area blown up to show this. Click Here for example avi file. A friend of mine rightly pointed out that for the Z axis (hip) joint I need to offset one or both of the hydraulic pistons to enable it to work "realistically". I will be doing that next and then continuing with the chassis & body meshes Last edited by riker3667; 05-03-2004 at 04:06 PM.. |

Opinion...
I find this Mechanism unrealistic, there's nothing "real" to it, just a couple of polygons sticked together. + you have som nay polygons for nothing.

Unfortunately. I have to agree with you there. lol
I'm placing the project on hold as I go into major re-design of the legs & lower chassis. With luck, I'll be able to post fresh progress pics in a few days. |
