Sub division is a technique that is common to most 3d software packages... it basicly divides your mesh into smaller parts, and can be used to achive a sort of "smoothing" effect... ....right everyone?

mehsmooth isnt exactly the same as convering to a sub-d
sub-d's are subdivision surfaces. different programs use them differenyl, xsi has sub-d by preesing + or -/ maya has a convert to sub-d. which means you have 3 levels of detial. 1 2 and 3 . and you have a different number of cv's per level; . so you can edit in finer detail.

To get a practical idea of what sub-D's are and how they work, download a copy of Wings 3D (freeware) and some simple tutorials. It's actually a really cool and easy way to model organic stuff, once you get your mind wrapped around the concept.
