My First 3d model
hi guys, i found this site last week and the exciting realm of 3d art has taken hold of me, inspired by the marvelous stuff in the gallery...ive downloaded the trial version of studio max now and im working on my first 3d model (well technically i have made some little stuff like a pen and a couple other small things to learn the software but nothing i spent any time on)
anyway, i thought I'd show you guys, for some friendly crit and probably because i'll have to ask for help along the way ![]() i spent about 2 hours on the body...and then another 4 hours trying to get the breasts and ass to look right...which as you can see, i have yet to do! then i spent probably 6 or so hours on the head...probably 3 of those have been spent just on the nose, which i wanted to make presentable before bothering to put it up here. i am doing this using the famous joan tutorial...i've got to ask, is there a better way to model heads?? this is crazy, im having to hand place each vertex and that ending up rotating and inspecting and rendering and adjusting for each one... also, im curious...when you model a head or body, do you usually start with an existing model and just modify it to fit the ref image of the new desired model, or do most people start from scratch? also, how long does it usually take the experts to do this stuff? in the joan tutorial, it looks like the guy did her in just a few hours...is that realistic? i know the body looks like crap :/

i think that the better way to do a model head is following the human head structure (the muscles)... practice turn in perfection... and ordinarily you have to do the crazy stuff with the vertex... (at least i do)also, im curious...when you model a head or body, do you usually start with an existing model and just modify it to fit the ref image of the new desired model, or do most people start from scratch? if the model that i wanna do fits in some way with one that i already have, i'll take it and modify. if not start from scratch. also, how long does it usually take the experts to do this stuff? in the joan tutorial, it looks like the guy did her in just a few hours...is that realistic? for someone who take the 3d serious i think that yes, it's possible. keep studying and tweaking... ![]()

Rodrigo, i'm not quite sure what you mean about modelling by the muscles. I definitely tried to make the polygon edges form a contour map of the muscles, are you suggesting something different or just that I do a better job?
Downup, thanks I'll take that as a compliment

Daaaammnn!! I echo Downup's sentiment - "no way this is your first model". It's too good to be a first.
especially considering the time you spent on it.... |

haha, im not lying...i had to ask on these forums how to use the cut/weld functions when i got to the head...the only models i have made before have been simple shapes like spheres and cubes but i never tried moving the vertexes before

open your head file, then click on FILE on the menu bar, then click merge, then click ok, thats all : ) The Joan tutorial is the best. Keep on goin dude, once you perfect it, you'll be an instant master. : )

hello,
For your eyes balls, you have to make it much bigger as big as they have to tuch each other inside the head..or something like that, we don't see it so it doesn't matter but this is the better size for the eye ball, and owenc1979 is right this the best tutorial to start....keep working and you will make it....the face is nice, the body need more work...but it's only the beggining so it's normal... |

quite nice (esp. if that's really your first
)first, I'd like to suggest you change the eyelid, as seen in teh pic i attached, and also, the ear looks a bit too flat at the bottom ![]()

owen: thanks!
dragonkiss: i had them larger but they didn't look right. I did a quick search and one source said the average diameter of the eyeball was 1" which is about what I have...does it look too small people? TOXIC - thanks, I tried to correct the eye...do you think this is about right? the ear ref pic I am using does not show much detail in that area but I made an effort to fatten it because I felt my ear was fatter there. also made changes to the chin, neck, skull cap, eyebrows, nose, and mouth (in addition to the eye and ear :P ) I have discarded the joan reference pictures long ago when I realized the nose and eyes didn't even line up between views. it's too cartoony for me. I'm using real photos as reference for the eyes and ears, and the rest I've been going on from memory of the shape of the head. I'm going more for realism I don't care for cartoonish features much. let me know what you think the most problem areas are. note: if you are going to point out tendons in the neck, I just haven't gotten there. how does the forehead look? chin? eyes? ears? nose? ![]()

the eyelid itself looks better, but you should also make the same change to the fold immediatly above the eye, otherwise it looks like he (she?) has a sad face on
![]() keep up the good work ![]()
