Gerald Scarfe design: Devil
Hello all. I thought I'd share this with you guys.
I was looking through my books for inspiration/reference material for my apocalypse character and I stumbled across this sketch (shown below) by Gerald Scarfe. The more I looked at it the more I loved it and wondered if it was possible to translate this into 3d. After a while the desire to model it become too much and well, the second post is where I am at now. I'm mostly roughing out form so it looks kinda clunky at the moment. But I'm anxious to see how stylized I can make this one. I want to have large flowing curves in the overall appearence, but also have harsh agles and flat areas on the model. I'm hoping it turns out the way I see it in my mind's eye. Here is the sketch. Again, by Gerald Scarfe. |

Here's where I am currently at. Keep in mind I generally like to rough out as much form as possible before going in and tweaking and adding in details. So this is still very early on.

Like you said, it's looks kinda clunky at the moment, but it looks good
The face looks great, I really like it.The neck is way too long though IMO This makes me want to do one of his characters in 3D ![]()

look like some good char is going to see the day!! !Looks a bit like disney's vilain (like those in hercule or anastasia) I'love it !!
But as rubberduck said the neck is way too long and seems shorter in your concept |

Thanks guys,
I agree with you about the neck. I saw it too right after I posted the image. I guess that was the sort of Tim Burton in me trying to make this character gangly and over exaggerated. I changed it a little bit (thanks to some FFDs). Oh, and chaos_seed, you are right I found this sketch in a Making of Hercules book. Good call! I am trying a new way to make hands. You can kinda see it in the image below. I'm basically using what you would use as a rig to first put the fingers into position then going in and attaching all of them and making the knuckles. It seems like it might work well enough, but I realized the hand that I did that with isn't in the right position. D'oh! So I'm gonna go back to an older file and reposition the fingers and try it again. |

well thats funny ?Do you model that way ? Using somekind of skelton and getting your modeling straight on it when your pose is defined ? I thaugt you would just put bones in it add a quick skin and then put it to wahtever pose you choosed ?

Nope, I never model this way. I usually do like most people and model a character in a davinci type pose so I can use symmetry and then rig and pose after the model is done. But since I don't plan on animating this guy and he is so abstract I just like the idea of him not being symmetrical and thought I'd give this way a try.
So far on this guy I've used Box modeling, poly-by-poly modeling, spline modeling and whatever you'd call that method I'm using on the hands. Oh, I've also lofted a couple of times. I'd probably try NURBS too if Max wasn't so bad at them ![]() |

Started adding wrinkles to the sleeves. But I think I'm gonna call it a night.

First of all, I want to make this clear. I didn't do the concept. It's by Gerald Scarfe. So I want to give him all the credit for it. I found the drawing in the book The Art of Hercules: The Chaos of Creation. Okay, I hope that clears up any confusion on that issue.
I've been trying to figure out how to do the chair he's on. Right now I'm stuck on the wings that come off of it and I'm trying various methods to get it. Here's what I have now, but I feel its still lacking something. chaos_seed - His sleeve is his arm! At least thats how I'm approaching it. I like that abstract view of him. Dragonkiss and CountZero - thank you |
