Unhappy need advice: Compression and File type

Hi, I've been looking all over the place for tutorials on creating movie files with 3d max 5 and can't find any.

Does anyone have a clue on what codecs are best, and what file type to save a movie as for quality playback on T.V.?

I have 720x480 sized frames, and there is lots of fast motion in the movie. I've tried making an .avi file with the MPEG-4 video codec, version 3, with around 4700 bit rate and 80 crispness, but I get artifacts from wrong bit rate settings or something, and blockiness.

Does anyone have a better idea of how I could do this?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt.
