The French used Xylylbromid
later both parties used Bromessigsäureethylester and Dianisidinchlorsulfonat but the results were not "satisfying". The Germans then used chlorine gas then France utilized "Phosgen" (Carbonoxyddichloride COCL2) in a pure form which was used as a 5%-additive to chlorine gas by the Germans before.

Sorry, i can't translate the other two to English for lack of sufficient knowledge of the English chemical terminology.
