Unhappy Animation/keyframing HELP

Hopeing that someone can help me. I have been looking for an answer to this for a while now, and have no doubt that there is probably a simple solution.

It's quite difficult to explain so please bare with me.

I have just finished rigging a character in 3d studio max 4. I began animating a walk sequence. However as certain parts of the body move e.g. the hips other parts seem to float around e.g. the feet. Ever so slightly, is there any way to stop this.

Also I position the feet in three different positions using three keyframes. As it goes through the second keyframe the motion of the foot tends to arc quite badly. If you look at the trajectories they are really arced. Is there any solution to this.

Hopefully this makes sense to someone

cheers

Hopefully this image will help explain my problem
