Vehicle: Chrysler Crossfire

Hi @ all!

My debut at 3dtotal.com And I start with a question... Well the pictures below are showing my latest work and in brief its process of making - my state of the art. I was trying to learn moddeling during the creation of this car - at least I started doing 3D about 3 Month ago

ok. I reachted my goal an now know hoe to moddel and handle 3ds max. The next goal is to understand how to trade and make realistic materials. As you see in below the mats are not quite good - especially the front- and backlights , but even the gray falloff of the carpaint doesnīt comfort me... btw. Btw. the environment of the car is just a test - so the modell itself is (nearly) Final and the Mats are definetly not....

So heres my question: Could anybody give some hints, advises, links, tuts how to do realistic materials for rim, front- and backlights and how to illuminate those? I would like to animate someone hitting the brakes....

greeetz and thnx,

wave

Iīve got some probs with the server so if you dontīsee any pictures - pleas try again later....

Welcome wave:

What a way to "break in" and introduce your self.
1: I love this car, I gock every time I see one drive buy, who knew that Chrysler could make such a work of art (true the did have a bit of help from Mercedes)

2: you have done this beauty of a vehicle justice! This is a great looking model. Mesh looks very nice, I see no real errors, and your hood groves look GREAT..

As far as your question goes, it looks to me as though your using the default scanline render? Well its a lot harder to make a "real" looking render with scanline, you will need to set up a light dome (to fake GI) that should give your textures a little boost with come correct lighting.

thnx USED-3DT, it was a hard kind of work... there are still some dents in the front and the rear bumper and i made the mistake that I "modified" some Vertices under the handle of the door and made another dent but alas... But you are right - a wonderful car, isnīt it? I saw one yesterday on the Highway but my good old VW Golf TDI (90 HP) was way too slow...

An yes you are right - i rendered with the standard scanline renderer and with no GI... Iīm doing some tests at the moment with mental-ray-renderer - colored and raytraced shadows and caustics in order to achive a better result concerning the backlights.... (sorry for my german english ) and Iīm planing to modify the geometry of the Backlight-glasses to achive those refractive elements... but had no time up to now ...

Yes, you have done a fabulous job, and it looks fantastic, but the rear lights looks a little strange. Maybe you need a different material or something?

Yeah, like I said, itīs the Material that makes it look so bad, but it is the modelling as well. There is a seam missing and Iīm trying to work with cones and stuff like this to get this reflectors done... if only i had a render farm ....

greetings!

Some time ago I started this threat - the time passed and I had the chance to modify the mats...

the renderings below are stil WIP - cuz there are several errors I plan to eleminat in further renderings... The list of the small faults is too big and my capacity of english is too low to master it rhetorical expressions .. did I get this done? ... lol ... There is no postwork done yet - of cause it should be done, but uff - I need a little break ...

But anyway, I would like to ask you to post c&cs concerning everything you think is worth to mention....

thnx so far,
wave

an older one - showing the Mat tests of the backlights...

looking very nice there, love the textures.

I like the last side-on render, appears a little too bright which takes away the realistic feel. It is most noticable around the front wheels, other than that great model!

Just a suggestion...
Try maybe a few lights and set the rate to about 0.25 rather than just 1 light set to 1.0. Turn shadow on, will give it a bit more of a showroom feel.

Last few renders done using Mental Ray?

thnx for the comments. Well Iīm still testing the position and mats of objects in the environment and if you like I could post a screenshot about the "fotoset"...

@ travis_jinx: up to now there are 3 lights with differnt values and I am just testing one including skylight and a selfilluminated box... I think more lights would be too many... About the MR-suggestion - all the renderings are done with the standart Scanline-Renderer...

@ eXe69: I feel honored ... Carrera GT rules!

have a nice day,
wave
