Talking Awesome

Its a great reel!. How long have you been into 3D?
Im a senior in college, and trying to finish a short for my senior project. The 3d program at my school is kind of a joke, so my team and i are pretty much learning as we go. I am currently working on the rough animation. You can find, my work here:

you can view my progress under dailies
any suggestions or critiques would be a great help!

Your stuff looks awesome, Are you a student or a pro?

Thanks.

I just graduated from school, and most of the work on there (except for the vine jump and dialogue clip) I did while in school.

About your WIP, I have some suggestions about the pacing and camera placement,

For shot 1, the camera starts and stops abruptly. I'd suggest making it a steady movement from the start to end of the shot, or at least have some slow-in and slow-out

shot 2, it looks a bit strange framing the character on the right, like that, perhaps frame him more toward the left or zoom in closer so he takes up more of the frame.

The battle stations shot is too long I think. It could be cut in half or a third of it's length

I think the sequence with the guys running behind the chairs is weird, I don't really know what's happening... are other aliens running away or is it the same alien from the beginning running back and forth?

The shot where the alien looks at the running guys is too long as well. Perhaps just have a cut of him looking over to the running guys and then have an independent shot of them running.

The shot where the alien runs toward the camera, he runs through the camera. I think you should cut it a few frames so that it ends when he's taking up the whole frame, and then cut to the shot where he's running away from the camera

Thanks for the input! the scenes you saw are rough cut scenes, that are unedited, and out of order, and/or has missing peices, as i am working in a team and i am only responsible for a third of the animation.

Thanks alot, im going to put some serious thought into yr comments, and see if we can turn it around.

What school did you graduate from?

I go to california state university, monterey bay

Its 3d program is actually quite pathetic, they only offer 2 classes, 3d modeling and animation, and animation workshop. the second class is simply doing whatever you want without instruction. You receive very little instruction in the first class anyway. Its an odd school, its willing to pay to upgrade from maya 5 to maya 6, but it wont higher an instructor who knows what he's doing or even train the instructor on how to use the program in the first place.

Basically, im self taught in 3d and im reading the animator's survival kit, by rick williams (Great Book!) to teach me how to animate.
