Alethiometer

Here’s my attempt at the Alethiometer from Philip Pullman’s trilogy “His Dark Materials”.

Made in 3DS Max R5, and then put through PhotoShop to try and make it look like an old photo, emphasis on the word try

c&c welcome.

Oopps, forgot to mention that the design of the Alethiometer is taken from the book cover, image here. And the floor texture is from Total Textures.

Thanks elbaz_uk, 7JoeBlack8. It’s an interesting object indeed, being able to somewhat predict the future based on chaos theory.

I have read the three books and i must say you have got the alethometer it just like i thought i was when i read them.

How long time did you use on modeling, texturing etc?
Did you use HDRI?

Would like to see more of your work in the futuure!

Ratpouch, in the picture of the book cover, the Alethiometer seems to have a kind of watch-glass... I can't see any on your render.
Is this on purpose?
Or should I have to change my glasses/eyes?

Thanks for the comments everyone.

NordicDemon – Cheers, but I really can’t take credit for the design, we’ve got the cover artist to thank for that, I would love to know who they are.

In all, I suppose I spent about a week on the piece, working on it a few hours in the evening. As for the lighting, no HDRI or other GI was used, just a single direct light with SkyRaiders E-Light script.

Steph – Believe it or not, there is a glass cover over the hands/dials, you just can see it!

Heres a clay.
