3dsMAX6: Rusty Metal - How to do it?

Howdy,
i have searched both the net for a guide to making a rusty/worn metal metrial in max (im using 6).
im still very new to materials and am looking for a guide/tutorial etc that will give me the basics for making this king of material.
I am really stuck and have no idea what im doing in the material editor
if anyone has ANY kind of resource on this topic i would really appreciate them sharing it with me.
thanks in advance -brac

p.s ive tried following the one or two on the topic on 3dtotal but i couldnt follow even the opening steps.

Have u had a peek at the tutorial files in 3dmax itself?
3dcafe.com also has some ok tuts for basic stuff.

This one has some pointers.

hi thanks for the reply, yeah i have had a look at the tutes in max and now at that link you posted (thanks!)

my problem is that i dont understand which aspects of the material editor are effecting the rusty look.........

i.e which maps etc that i should be playing with to acheive the effect.......

the tutorials and such that ive had a look at dont explain very well a) why they are doing t aprticualr thing or b) how to acheive what they are........

well the rusty look u are reffering to is made using images. If u have one "clean" metal image and one rust image these can be combined to get the effect u are are looking for. There is no feature in max that can simply make rust.

U can then either combine them in a program like photoshop, paintshop etc, or use a multi layer material type directly in max.
