Max rendering problems

Rendering problems:

I made this file- a fighter throwing an axe kick.
When I tried to render the full clip(avi format using cinepak codec) max kept crashing giving me its regular errror message.
The same thing happened when I tried to render a single frame.

However today when I rendered a single frame I receive a proper output.
Then when I went for the whole clip, it crashed again.
So then I went again for a single clip and it crashed. I tried this for several times with the same result.

Then I deleted the entire model and rndered the biped. I got a result.
Then I rendered one object at a time.
Then the main body. But when I did the main body it crashed again.
Then I deleted parts of the main body and rendered it limb by limb-hands, head, feet -no probs. But when i try the full body it crashes. WHY?

The entire scene contains 12,727 polygons(including 4662 polys of the biped).
The body I spoke of is 6697 polys(It renderes 1 limb at a time-not full body)
The clothes are 1368

So whats up?
My comp dealer says I need an AGP card.
My system is Intel P4, 2.80GHz
RAM 512.
So do I really need a card or what?
I cant afford one right now -so some other solution?

I am afraid that your comp dealer wants to steal your money, and I am sure if u tell him that u got a headache he will recommened u to get a new AGP card as a cure!!
back to your problem, I assume u are using 3dsmax6, and if I understood u correctly you got a problem with the avi output only.. then it is good to tell u that max6 have a major problem with the avi output causing it to crash sometime at the movie output and to resolve this problem try to update your max6 to SP1 which was available at discreet's site then replace the file avi.bmi with the new one that available at discreet's aswell but ensure that u have upgraded to the sp1 first.
If u can not do that for some reasons or u are looking for much faster solution then try this trick:
locate an avi file on ur pc make a copy of it and in Max rendering output double click on that avi file to make max replace it with the one ur about to render rather than creating a new one and then render... it worked for me so try it urself.(try it several times with several avi files)
If the problem remained then post a reply!!

Pardon!!
u have sp4??
which version of 3dstudio are u using?

3dsmax6 has only one service pack so far, so what are u talking about?? I think u are talking about Windows!!

but anyway if the second solution did not work then try to merge your objects with another fresh scene, if that failed either check the rendering options and disable "force two sides" if it is enabled.
If not then try to stop the hardwere realtime rendering for viewports and back to HEIDI mode "software rendering" if no luck try to delete ur objects one by one and try rendering after that cuz sometimes a corrupted object could cause that!!
if that failed then...
try to remember, while u were working on your project did max show a message that an error occured and u better reset but u chose to retry!! if that happened then I am afraid ur project is doomed!! and u have to refer to earlier saved scenes!!

FYI, rendering an image has nothing to do with your video card, what so ever. you could have a 2mb trident card or a 256mb nvidia 6600 in the same computer and your renders would take the same amount of time and give you the same quality.
So your computer sales "looser" is completely wrong.
As for your problem, I would suggest renaming the avi output file name (because as soon as the render starts Max's creates the AVI file, and if Max were to crash it will corrupt the file, if you try and render again over the top of the file the same corruption may happen.. Also try another codec cinepak sucks!! And you could try to render it as something other than an AVI, you could do a mov, or render the frames as tiff's and compile them in premier (if you have it, that is)

Amit, the best thing to do is render each frame as a targa file....then assemble them in video post [I think it is]
Also you can use the divx encoder....I believe there is a 6 month free trial of it on their site.

ciao

Hye!
I got the SP1.
My original file is not working anymore, seems its gotten corrupted after so many crashes.
However, the other files rendered properly.
(Not that it helped though- my work stinks. Funny how a preview looks so good before u see a rendered version.)

Thnks
