speed modelling challenge week 21 - vacuum cleaner
The "rules" are simple,
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. 2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image. 3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc. Please post only one image per entry with a maximum file size of 100k and with the maximum dimensions of 800x600. This image should include at least one wire frame view of your finished model. Posts with multiple renders of the same object will be deleted. 4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure" 5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable 6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. 7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries 8, No external links to pictures, they must be attached using the browse button and be no larger than 800x600 pixels and 100k. Any pictures larger than this or links will be removed as soon as we see them and the poster will be disqualified immediately prizes of a 3D Total texture CDs to the best entrants. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by email. so, here we go, with this week's challenge deadline - 22.00 GMT Wednesday 10th November 2004 modelling time - 60 minutes subject "vacuum cleaner" another style icon that we take for granted, from early hoovers to modern machines such as the Dyson there's a challenging model for everyone. Good luck |

Ok...I threw this together as soon as I saw the topic. I ran out of time in the end so I couldn't stylize the arms as much as I wanted. I was going to add some pincers/vacuum head but "Kay Sera Sera". The texture kind of messed up around the venting and I am still trying to decide on whether it adds or detracts from the whole. Anyways...I can't wait to see what people have in store and I'm sure it will be fantabulous. Anywasy...I'm sure you can guess that this is a knockoff of the matrix sentinels but instead of hunting down and killing people...its hunts down...well...dirt. Not nearly as exciting but I wouldn't say no to have one in my house.

I think we would really like one in our house aswel!
We have this industrial awkword vacuum cleaner that resembles R2D2 more than a vacuum. As you can guess bringing it to the other floors in the house is NOT fun at all. I am sure your sentinel cleaner would be MORE than welcome Aside from the concept. Barks, why don't you give highend3D a visit? From the top of my head a few ready shaders I had seen in the MaYA section would go so great with your model. (note to 3DTotal ... guys I said SHADERS.. not TEXTURES.. ofcourse yours is best )If you used boolean; MaYA spreads the new created polygons or sometimes even triangulations to best fit the 1x1 coordinate system. That may be what went wrong. It does this also when you append to polygons. Doing a spherical projection (Dues to your models shape) would fix this easily. Oh wait that is if you DID work with poly's. But my personal opinion... leave it. I for one go through alot of trouble to get effects like that! ![]()

Thanks Black. The arms are just NURBs extrudes, but the body was made from a 10x10 sphere and then I extruded and knifed the hell out of it and finished her of with 3 smoothes; didn't boolean this one. Yea...I'll take a look at highend, they've got some damn nice stuff there. Can't wait to see what you post.
EDIT: Hey Black, I also had a question for you. Whereabouts in Maya do you do displacement maps for shaders...Thats what I wanted to do with the arms but I couldn't find it so I settled with a bump instead. Thanks.

Picking up where I left off with the last challenge. This is why i was thinking of vacuums during the tonearm challenge. It turned out to be good because I had already gone through the modeling process in my head.
60 mins in max to model 30 mins to texture, light, render and post Reference is here Ok no more flintstones for now

If it makes youe feel any better I had to do it twice. The first time I got all hung up on trying to make it look shaggy like the reference. By the time I realized that it wasn't going to happen in 60 mins my 60 mins was up.
With the shaggines aside there are still lots of places I could improve on it. Zbrush is looking better all the time.
